Razewing Rathalos is a Deviant of Rathalos
Contents
Physiology
Razewing Rathalos is notably larger than a normal Rathalos, and the scales on it's wings appear blue rather than the usual red, gradually fading to black the farther out and further back the wings go. The membranes on its wings are slightly damaged, and have a unique flame pattern. When it breathes fire, the scales around the feathers on the outermost parts of its wings glow a fiery orange before releasing steam.
Abilities
Razewing's flames are hotter and more powerful than a normal Rathalos, especially when it's enraged. Its poison is also more potent, and is located in both its talons and its tail.
Ecological Information
Placement in Food Chain
Like Rathalos, Razewing is an apex predator, being very high up on the food chain. He mostly feeds on Herbivores such as Kelby and Popo, as well as the occasional Wingdrake. If food becomes scarce, he will target somewhat larger monsters such as Great Maccao or Kulu-Ya-Ku. He competes with other apex monsters such as Legiana, Zinogre, and other Rathalos for food or territory. He will even clash with Elder Dragons on some rare occasions.
Behavior Toward Other Monsters
Razewing Rathalos typically ignored other monsters. Unlike both Rathalos and Azure Rathalos, Razewing will not call upon Rathian for aid if both are in the same locale, but also won't attack Rathian.
Tracks
Razewing Rathalos can leave Footprints on the ground, as well as Claw Marks or Strange Scorch Marks on the ground or on walls,
Specific Locale Interactions
Razewing Ratha can sometimes be seen walking or flying around the locale it's currently in. It can also be seen resting in certain spots, resting its wings or grooming itself. It will rest in higher areas more often than lower areas. It will also fling small rocks in four directions
Turf Wars
- Vs. 2★ - 3★ Theropod Bird Wyverns & Fanged Beasts/Anjanath/Fulgur Anjanath - Razewing swoops down and swipes the opposing monster, poisoning them and making them fall over. Brachydios/Iceblast Brachydios/Gasurabazura/Disaster Wyvern - The Brute Wyvern swings its forelimb at Razewing, but it dodges and grabs the Brute Wyvern by its back, lifting it up and slamming it back into the ground twice. - Vs. Glavenus/Acidic Glavenus - Glavenus swings its tail at Razewing, but it manages to dodge and grab onto its tail. As Glavenus tries to free its tail, Razewing drags it across the floor and tosses it. Glavenus quickly gets up and bats it away with its tail. (Tie in Razewing's Favor)
- Vs. Brute Wyverns - Razewing breathes fire at the Brute Wyvern, making it stagger and inflicting Fireblight. Razewing then grabs the Brute Wyvern, lifting it into the air and dropping it. - Vs. Mizutsune/Apex Mizutsune - Mizutsune smacks Razewing away with its tail, and then follows up with a jet of water from its mouth. Razewing takes to the air to avoid the jet, circling around and swooping in to swipe Mizutsune with its claws, poisoning it. Razewing then grabs Mizutsune, lifting it up a bit before throwing it back down. (Tie in Razewing's favor)
- Vs. Zinogre/Stygian Zinogre/Apex Zinogre - Zinogre attempts to smash Razewing with its claw, but Razewing dodges and takes to the air, staggering Zinogre with a fireball and inflicting Fireblight. Ecology
Habitat Range
In the Old World, Razewing Rathalos can be found at the Shrine Ruins, Frost Islands, Sandy Plains, and Lava Caverns. In the New World, it can be found at the Ancient Forest, Wildspire Wastes, Elder's Recess, Hoarfrost Reach, and Guiding Lands. It has also been sighted at the Coral Palace and Castle Schrade
Ecological Niche
Razewing Rathalos normally eats smaller monsters such as Popo and Aptonoth, but may occasionally prey upon larger monsters such as Great Jagras or Kulu-Ya-Ku. While it does not have any predators, it will frequently compete for territory for other dangerous monsters such as Zinogre or Rajang, even going as far as to challenge Elder Dragons such as Kushala Daora or Valstrax.
Biological Adaptations
Like most other Rathalos, Razewing Rathalos has adept flying capabilities, though these capabilities are taken to new heights due to mutations in its wings. They are discolored, and notably larger, letting Razewing stay in the air and maneuver much better than a standard Rathalos. Its body temperature is also abnormally high, and its wings are also used to vent excessive heat by exposing his blood cells to the cooler air. Both its tail and talons are poisonous, and have more potent poison than Rathian or Rathalos. Razewing's flame sac produces purple embers that can spontaneously combust, and if it becomes enraged, its scales darken, and its flames will become hotter. The purpose of its scales changing color is currently unknown, but the working theories are that it's used for camouflage or mimicry, or for taking in sunlight to raise its body temperature further. When its body temperature spikes, it enters a state labeled "Ruin State," where its flame sac increases production of these purple embers, which quickly combust due to the immense heat. The excess embers are expelled from its wings in a similar fashion as excessive heat is, but they immediately combust as they leave its body, essentially causing its wings to burst into purple flames.
Behavior
Razewing Ratha is extremely dangerous. The guild only allows hunters with special permissions to attempt to hunt it.

Cutscenes
Cutscene 1: "The Unusual Rathalos"
- Quest: "Temperate Temperatures"
- Location: Hoarfrost Reach zone 10
- Synopsis: The hunter enters the northern side of Zone 10, looking for the Tempered Shrieking Legiana they were tasked with hunting. They stop for a moment to look around, only to hear a familiar ear-piercing cry above them. The hunter turns around and sees the Shrieking Legiana flying overhead. The Shrieking Legiana dives down towards the hunter, who dodges just as it crashes into the ground, sliding and tumbling across the ice. The Shrieking Legiana gets up as they face each other, and the hunter notices that the monster has visible burns and injuries. The Shrieking Legiana lets out another cry, but then a secondary roar is heard. The Hunter turns around and sees a Rathalos with blue wings in the air above them. The Shrieking Legiana backs up, almost slipping off of the icy cliff, and the Rathalos spits a fireball at the ground between the hunter and Shrieking Legiana, making the ground shake and crumble under them. The hunter leaps to safety, and the Shrieking Legiana takes to the sky, flying away with the Rathalos in hot pursuit. The hunter watches as the two monsters leave.
Cutscene 2: "The Wings of Fire"
- Quest: "Flames Above the Ruins"
- Location: Castle Schrade
- Synopsis: The hunter swoops down via Wingdrake to the old scorched battlefield where they and Aiden fought Fatalis, looking around the place before a roar fills the sky. Razewing Rathalos drops down from the sky in front of the hunter as they draw their weapon, slowly circling each other. Razewing rears back and lets out another roar as the fight begins.
Cutscene 3: "The Wings of Ruin"
- Quest: "Flames Above the Ruins"
- Location: Castle Schrade
- Synopsis: Razewing Rathalos staggers back from taking the hit that initiated the cutscene. He takes a few steps back as purple embers begin coming off of his wings. Razewing lets out a roar as his eyes glow and the embers burst into purple flames, sending the Hunter flying backwards. The hunter gets back up, seeing a cloud of smoke where Razewing was before. With a flap of his wings, Razewing clears the smoke, revealing his Ruin state. The hunter gets ready to fight as Razewing lets out an ear piercing cry.
Cutscene 1: "The Unusual Rathalos"
- Quest: "Boiling Bubbles"
- Location: Frost Islands
- Synopsis: The hunter will enter area 10, looking for the Apex Mizutsune they were tasked with hunting. They hear a cry and turn to see the Apex Mizutsune enter the zone, having sustained some injury and appearing to be in a hurry. The Apex Mizutsune stops for a moment and looks at the hunter, facing them and angrily roaring as the hunter gets ready to draw their weapon. Suddenly, another roar is heard as both of them look up, only to see a barrage of fireballs raining down upon them. The hunter dodges out of the way, but Apex Misutsune is hit by two of them before roaring at its attacker and fleeing to another zone. The hunter looks up as a Rathalos with blue wings lands in front of them, letting out a roar as the hunt begins.
Cutscene 2: "The Wings of Fire"
- Quest: "Flames Above the Palace"
- Location: The Coral Palace
- Synopsis: The camera slowly pans over the Coral Palace. As a roar rings out, fireballs rain down from the sky, scorching the battleground as smoke rises. Razewing Rathalos drops down and lands on the top of the palace, looking over the destruction he's caused as he raises his wings in the air. The camera freezes as the text "Wings of Ruin - Razewing Rathalos" appear. The camera goes back to normal and Razewing lets out a powerful roar as the camera zooms out and lighting crackles in the clouds.
Cutscene 3: "The Wings of Ruin"
- Quest: "Flames Above the Palace"
- Location: Coral Palace
- Synopsis: Razewing Rathalos staggers back from taking the hit that initiated the cutscene. He takes to the air as purple embers begin coming off of his wings. Razewing lets out a roar as his eyes glow and the embers burst into purple flames, sending the Hunter flying backwards. The hunter gets back up, seeing a cloud of smoke where Razewing was before. A purple fireball comes out of the smoke straight at the hunter, who dodges as the fireball hits the ground near them. The blast destroys the remaining ground of the battlefield, dropping the hunter into the caverns below. When the hunter gets up, Razewing is descending into the cave in his Ruinous State, letting out another roar as the hunter gets up and the battle begins.
Notes
- Razewing Rathalos is based on Razewing Ratha from Monster Hunter Stories 2
- There are several references to Monster Hunter Stories 2 in its abilities, cutscenes and turf wars.
- While in its Ruin State, Razewing's roar will sound similar to Apex Rathalos's.
