Oculossis are elephantine Fanged Beasts notable for their spotted red shells. What they lack in elemental power or status effects, they compensate for with sheer aggression and sharp tusks.
Physiology[]
Oculossis are large Fanged Beasts that resemble a cross between a mammoth and a bear, possessing long trunks, muscular limbs with sharp claws, stocky bodies, a pair of curved tusks that point upward, sharp fangs and powerful molars within their maws, and relatively long, pointed ears. They have cream-yellow, leathery skin, and red, armadillo-like shells that are covered in white spots line their faces, backs, and limbs. Similar to frogs, they lack tails and have large eyeballs, the latter of which are sky-blue. They have three clawed toes on their front feet and two on their back feet. To allow for effective rolling, the tusks are relatively short in size.
Ecological Information[]
Placement in Food Chain[]
Oculossis is an aggressive carnivore that sits low on the food chain and faces competition from other monsters within or above its rank, such as Great Jagras and Anjanath. Voracious and opportunistic, they eat anything they can catch, but predominantly feed on young Aptonoth and Kestodon. Sometimes, it is hunted by larger monsters, such as Rathalos, Glavenus, and Deviljho.
Behavior Towards Other Monsters[]
Ferocious by nature, Oculossis will attack anything smaller than itself and try to consume it, and will also attack anything that it competes with for food and territory. If faced with a larger predator like Rathalos or Glavenus, it will curl itself up into a ball and roll away.
Tracks[]
Oculossis leaves Oculossis Footprints and Rolling Trails on the ground and Tusk Marks on trees and walls.
Special Locale Interactions[]
Oculossis can be seen sleeping (if daytime) or patrolling the area for prey (if nighttime) when undisturbed.
Special Behavior[]
If Oculossis is in the same area as other monsters, it may roar at them and initiate an assault or Turf War. If there are other Oculossis in the area, it can summon them with its roars.
Abilities[]
Oculossis do not possess any elemental powers and simply rely on their own brute strength to overpower prey. They prefer to swallow small prey whole. It is known to occasionally curl up into a ball and roll away to escape from predators.

Etymology[]
Oculossis is a combination of oculus (Latin for eye) and russus (Latin for red). The name is a nod to the scientific name of the Red Bulborb, Oculus kageyamii russus. Kageyamii is most likely taken from Daisuke Kageyama, one of the Pikmin developers credited for creature design.
Notes[]
- Oculossis was inspired by Bulborbs, common enemies that appear in the video game Pikmin and its sequels. Their design in specifically based on Red Bulborbs, the most common variety.
- Oculossis was revamped by Nin10DillN64 to be more elephantine in order to help make it more original and distance it from Bulborbs some more.
- Inspiration for the redesign comes from mammoths and Donphan from Pokémon. The former is due to Bulborbs being originally designed as mammoths in Pikmin's early development, whereas the latter was chosen to make the design a little less like the Bulborbs and enable the rolling present in the original design.
- When low on stamina, Oculossis will trip after performing certain attacks. It will eat an Herbivore to regain stamina.
- Their roars require Earplugs to block. If any other Oculossises are nearby, they will come to the roaring Oculossis's aid.
- Similar to Espinas, an Oculossis can be found sleeping if it is daytime.
- The name of Oculossis's quest was inspired by the Bulborb's Japanese name, which is Chappy.
- Oculossis's original name was "Mademera," which is a combination of マダラ madara (spots) and デメ deme (bug-eyed).
- Credit for the old icon goes to FireBall13.
