The Obsidian Deviljho are Subspecies of the Deviljho. Originally only thought to live in volcanic areas, they have been discovered to be nomadic like normal Deviljho since the 5th Elder Crossing. They are most infamous for one causing a serious incident for the Research Commission's members, including their famous hunter.

Aesthetic Differences/Appearance

Obsidian Deviljho
Obsidian Deviljho Icon by Rathalosaurus rioreurensis A Deviljho subspecies with a black hide resemblant of metallic hardened lava, resistant against attacks. Consuming a diet of both meat and mineral ore, they are able to utilise both dragon element and blazing flames to destroy their limited opposition. Extremely dangerous, their violence is worse than any common Deviljho.

The Obsidian Deviljho has the base appearance that the Deviljho has in Monster Hunter: World, with several differences. There are deep scarring on its maw, legs and tail that is like the ones found on its back. On the mouth, there are a few more teeth that are more thin and curved than the rest. These teeth are designed to pierce rather than shred, comparable to that of a pick-axe. Said teeth are designed for Obsidian Deviljho's diet of meat and minerals, which it needs those teeth to break apart the stones and other hard materials that contain it.

Obsidian Deviljho are capable of entering two different rage modes depending on conditions. The dragon mode gives the same changes as Deviljho, the scarring on its back opens and expands the muscles, and making its scars and eyes glow red.

The Obsidian Deviljho has much more aesthetic differences in its fire mode. The scarring on its maw, legs and tail expands the muscles like the back does in dragon mode. This changes the Obsidian Jho's appearance in several ways. The head is extended in length and width, with the opened scarring revealing more teeth, most of which the ones that carve stone. The scar expansion on its legs bulkens them, expanding size of its feet and leg width. The scar expansion on its tail expands the tail, shaping the end into a mace. The back muscle still expands, but to a much lesser extent. The eyes, scarring and swollen muscles will also glow orange in fire mode.

If enraged enough from pain, the Obsidian Deviljho will enter the blaze state. The aesthetic changes are a mix of both fire and dragon mode. All muscles that expand in both modes expand in this state. The eyes, scarring and muscles glow crimson in this state, and a slight crimson steam emits from the muscles when enraged. The Blaze State also effects its non-enraged state, as the scarring and eyes on an Obsidian Deviljho in Blaze State will always glow crimson, which doesn't end until it is slain or captured.

Behaviour

Obsidian Deviljho, like the normal Deviljho are extremely violent monsters that have no problem with tearing apart anything that cross its path. Monsters and hunters alike are targeted equally as can be, or it will fight one using the other. As they have the elemental energies of Dragon and Fire running through it, Obsidian Deviljho devour both the inhabitants and the landscape of the many environments they pass through.

It in addition, can rip large chunks out of rock and ore, using them as weapons in a very similar way to monsters.

Unlock Requirements

In the New World, in order to begin the Obsidian Deviljho questline, hunters must have completed at least one Deviljho quest and slain Xeno'Jiiva.

Obsidian Deviljho Questline

Like with other update monsters in World, Obsidian Deviljho gets its own special questline.

To begin the questline, hunters must first speak to the Wyvernian Researchers, where they will say that they have recently came across some strange markings, appearing to have been made by the teeth of an apex predator. They request the hunters help in the situation; answering no leaves them annoyed and prompts them to say Hhmph! Research is part of your job as a hunter, not just finding and maiming them! Don't come back until you remember that fact!. Answering "Yes" to the request will somewhat make them happier, uncoincidentally to the dismay of the hunter, they require time to begin the expedition into the matter. Hunters must complete two quests/investigations and then return to Astera. Upon arriving back, things look normal at first, but soon as dialogue is made with any of the Fleet members, they tell the hunter that they must go and see the Field Team Leader. Looking in the Canteen, hunters see that The Handler is nowhere to be found.

The hunter is prompted to speak to The Commander in Astera by the Field Team Leader after a talk.

  • Field Team Leader: Hey buddy, it's been a while hasn't it. Its also been a while since we've had a large problem on our hands, and unfortunately, fate's come knockin' on our door. You see... we've kind of had a little, let's say, handler problem. Yeah, you've kinda already noticed that your handler is missing. Lets say that you'll be needed. Gramps over there will tell you the full story.

After this brief info, the hunter learns of a situation that has occurred in the Rotten Vale.

  • The Commander: Your timing couldn't be any more perfect hunter. I'm afraid to tell you hunter, that your handler has gotten herself into trouble once again. We have just gotten word that she and the Serious Handler have failed to return from an investigation into strange occurrences in the Rotten Vale. Despite the wyvernian's best efforts to tell her NOT to tag along with the business of the Serious Handler and her Excitable A-Lister Hunter, your Handler went in regardless. Apparently, the Handler went in there because she had discovered food in the depths of the vale and was not able to pass on this offer. What she considers edible in that festering, decomposed cesspit of a place is something I do not want to learn. What I do want to know, is that they are to be rescued and returned back to Astera at once! Hunter, I have reports that suggest two Deviljho's are present in the Rotten Vale, brought there like your Handler from hunger. You must eliminate these threats immediately, and make sure those three do not come to harm, the consequences of a loss of one of the Fifth Fleet would be too much to bear!

There, the first quest is given, Long Lost Appetite 2; Draconic Feast.

Hunters can only enter the locale via the first camp for this assignment, and cannot access the lowest section where Vaal Hazak resides.

Upon entering Area 1, hunters are greeted with the sight of the Excitable A-Lister being chased by one of the two Deviljho's reported in the area. "It's gonna eat me! Help!". The A-Lister is pinned down by the Jho and the jaws are almost ready to clamp down when a rib-bone falls from above right into the mouth. The hunter has shot a rock at the bone and saved the A-Lister from another imminent death. The Deviljho wobbles around trying to free the rock until it loses balance and smashes into a wall. The A-Lister has all of the information the hunter needs. You're a real life safer buddy, almost thought that would be it for me. And from what I can tell by the look on your face you want to know everything that happened. Hate to tell you this, but before we could even get near your Handler, a Deviljho got the drop on us and got us separated. Not just from my Handler, but from my sword! I've had that thing for years! Afraid I won't be of any use until I find it, though I'm sure that you'll find the Serious Handler down below... I hope.. The Deviljho rises up from its brief unconsciousness and roars in the hunter and A-Lister's direction. And maybe stop that hungry hungry Jho!. The Deviljho gets back up and enters rage as the Excitable A-Lister leaves to find his weapon.

The hunter must slay this Deviljho, which is smaller and weaker than normal to access the next part of the hunt. When the final blow on the Deviljho is made in Area 3, it will crash through the rocky barrier to the second layer and fall from the paths edge to its end. Continuing down the path into Area 6, battle occurs from above, with an Odogaron fighting an obscured monster. Soon the Odogaron comes rocketing down with a loud smash, with its tail missing and several parts wounded. Bones shards are dropped on the downed Odogaron and in pain it leaves the area.

The next area, Area 7 is where the hunters find the Serious Handler and the second Deviljho. Unable to defend herself, she aggravates some Girros and makes it look as if the Jho had caused it. The Girros pack attacks the Deviljho before it can try and attack her attack, dropping it to the floor with Paralysis bites. The Serious Handler explains her side of the story. Thank goodness you've come here, I didn't know how long I could have come up with ideas to repel it. As you can tell already, your Handler has gotten herself into trouble... yet again! We went in here to find her, and before we could even start a Deviljho came storming in a fury! And my hunter somehow managed to lose his own sword trying to scare the Deviljho off like a Kelbi! As if this wasn't bad enough, a second Deviljho showed up after he was chased! Wait, you've already defeated the first one? I've seriously haven't heard of any hunter who has done that so quickly, well maybe a very select few but none from this fleet. Maybe then that idiot will actually have a chance to survive this. The conversation is interrupted by a bone-chilling crunch of a Girros. The Deviljho bites the Girros in half and begins to take out the rest. Look, there's not much time left, the area is blockaded with boulders and your Handler is nowhere near in sight. I'm going to go and continue looking, and please do what you did to that other Deviljho on that one too!. The Serious Handler runs off as the Deviljho does a final slam of the last Girros into the a wall. Seeing the hunter above, it becomes enraged like the first Jho and fights the hunter.

After the hunter has done enough damage to the Deviljho it will emit a bellow of rage and pain and begin stumbling around the area. The scene cuts to a large leg of meat in Area 8, still somewhat fresh. A certain person is next to investigate this. Yes, yes yes! This proves my theory that meat doesn't spoil the instant it falls into the vale! And what better way to confirm this further than taking, maybe a few hundred bites out of it!. The Serious Handler manages to enter and try to warn her. Hey! What are you doing?! Don't you know you're in serious danger here?!. Her yells are met with ignorance, Aw, don't worry! The Commander wouldn't be too worried about me go-. Before she can finish the sentence the Deviljho crashes through the boulder barrier in Area 7 into their area. Seeing the leg of meat, it goes for it and snatches it up in its mouth as it limps away down to the lowest layer of the locale. The Handler still thinking with her stomach goes after it. Noo! Come back here! You won't ruin another feast of mine!. The Serious Handler is more than a little annoyed, Has she forgotten what happened the last time she encountered a Deviljho?! Come on! We got to stop her!. The hunter and Serious Handler give chase.

First Preview Appearance of Obsidian Deviljho

A Terrible Turn Of Events: Rotten Vale: Area 10

The Handler runs after the Deviljho, carrying the large leg of meat into the area. She is blissfully unaware of the black smokescreen in the area that is completely hiding the entrance into Area 13 and blurring everything else. The Jho carries on regardless, despite its injuries. The hunter and Serious Handler catch up to The Handler, calling out to her to forget about the food and return back with them. Stop it! Are you trying to become its next meal?! the Serious Handler shouts, managing to catch the attention of The Handler. Ooohhh... how can I let such a scrumptious leg of meat go to waste! Please, just a little bite?, The Handler begs. The Excitable A-Lister enters in after recovering his weapon. It took you long enough! the Serious Handler scoffs, to which the A-Lister complains, Aw come on! Finding a grey sword in the middle of all these bones is no easy task you know!. Behind them, sounds of battle are heard in the smokescreen and the Odogaron thought to have fled is thrown out from the blackness behind The Handler. She is completely unaware of this and is more interested in the argument between the Serious Handler and her dunce of a hunter. The Fanged Wyvern slowly gets up, the injuries it has sustained aggravating its rage already fuelled by meat. The scales on its back glow red as the Odogaron spies its new target. The hunter reaches out and the Serious Handler cries out Look out! as the Odogaron rises up, The Handler losing her smile. Unable to do anything, the Odogaron strikes The Handler in the back with one of its most damaging attacks. Only able to emit a short pained grunt, she falls to her knees, only to be launched to the hunter and the Serious Handler via a kick from Odogaron. The hunter lets out a yell of shock (the sound clip is the same as if they took a strong attack), and the Excitable A-Lister lets out a yell of No!, seeing The Handler roll across the rough floor, coming to a stop completely unconscious.

The Serious Handler in anguish now starts getting truly serious, Agh! Why couldn't you, just, listen, to, me! You! Get over here and help me lift her out of here before we all get killed! Hell of an annoyance she may be, we can't leave her!. The hunter comes to the Handler's side, visibly wounded by the attack. At least I brought aid for if something like this would happen! The Serious Handler pours a Potion containing a mixture of healing ailments and Jerky vitamins onto the main wound, triggering a slight reaction of pain from the Handler. The Excitable A-Lister is somehow able to fight off the Odogaron, though it is heavily due to it being so wounded. It is sent rolling back after a side slash, making the A-Lister cocky again. Yahoo! That's what you get for messing with the Fifth Fleet you hairless red dog! Yeah, crawl back into that smoke back to that monster! I'll gladly take that one down too!. The Odogaron actually does this, and right as it turns around is struck by a large rock from the area and killed. Its body falls next to the Serious Handler, who gives the Odogaron's head a hard kick in anger. A shadowy figure appears in the smoke, which ignites some fire and digs out a second rock, smaller but in flames. The A-Lister is too into the fighting spirit to think about this rationally. What's up big guy?! Too scared of my awesomeness?! Get your scaly hide out here and show me your true Rathalos!. Shut up!. screams the Serious Handler in a desperation to stop him taunting the monster. The monster throws the crumbling, burning rock with great speed. The A-Lister reacts appropriately as it is with him, Oh yes, you step on out- oh no! No please don't I'm not ready for ranged combat! Ahhh!. The rock breaks on the shield that the A-Lister just remembered about, but the fragments and fire still get through to him and send him rolling to the floor in pain. He also falls unconscious from his injuries. The hunter also reacts to this second casualty.

The Serious Handler lets out her emotions as she runs to the A-Lister, Nooo! Damn it! Why did you have to be so freaking stupid! Why did I get assigned with you as your Handler?! I should have been paired with someone actually competent like that hunter over there! And that Handler would be perfect fit for you! But, no. I got selected to babysit you! Can't believe you and others consider you a part of an elite group of hunters, you're just pathetic! A kid! I'll be more than happy to have the one over there as my replacement than have to deal with you again!. She then directs her attention, You, hunter! We've got to get out of here, now!. The hunter and the Serious Handler pick up their respective Handler and hunter and leave the Rotten Vale as the mysterious monster returns back into the smoke.

The return to Astera

The hunter and the Serious Handler return to Astera, carrying the seriously injured and unconscious Handler and A-Lister respectively on their backs. Instantly, members of the Commission rush to the scene to the terrible sight. The Handler and the Excitable A-Lister are definitely not the most liked of the group, but they are still part of the team and it is a shock for everyone that something like this has happened. The Serious Handler still miffed at the A-Lister continues a less personally felt rant to him. I told you so many times not to taunt and make light of monsters, that hunting must be taken seriously at all times and you still ignored me! Now look what's happened! I... still can't believe you did that.. Amongst the commotion the Commander walks through the crowd to the hunter, with the Handler beside them. He asks a simple and clear question, Hunter... what the hell, happened?.

The scene then cuts to the hunter walking away from a medical area in Astera where the Handler and the Excitable A-Lister lay under care, and then pans to them at the meeting area with the Commander. And he is not pleased, Those two Deviljho are, and were worth nothing compared to those two hard-working members of the Fifth Fleet. In all my years of operation here I have seen several tragedies, though few related to hunts, always have stuck with me. However, I hoped I'd never see the day when our greatest group of the Commission would be put out of action by a monster. And especially not by incompetence! The Serious Handler tries to argue, Please Commander I had no hand in this! They just ran in! I tried as best as possible to try and stop this but they wouldn't listen! It's their own fault!. The Commander is quick to respond, Enough! Telling by your story you could have gone in and rescued the Handler before any of this could have even happened. In fact that Deviljho could have just been avoided all together with both you and the hunter working together to get into the area and grabbing her out of there. This easily preventable incident lies on both on your hands for failing to come up with a better plan! And there will be consequences for this failure! But first, to tell you what is to happen with you, hunter, now that your Handler will no longer be able to preform her roles.

The Commander then tells the hunter what they will do now that the Handler is out of action, Hunter, for the time being until your Handler is suitable to return to active duty, the Serious Handler will now be your active Handler. Please, see to her for quest matters. I can assure you that she is more than capable of filling in the role as well as your Handler did.

An incident like this must never be allowed to happen again. Due to these circumstances, I have no choice but to suspend all active research in the New World until further notice, and prohibit any travel unless given explicit authorisation. Furthermore, a group of Guild Knights from the Old World city of Dundorma will be here in three days. A Brute Tigrex has decided it wanted to run rampant in the Wildspire Waste after they kicked it out of its old home. You are NOT allowed to assist them, we don't have the manpower to help them and I will not let anymore of our members be incapacitated. Astera must not be left weakened! And most of all, under no circumstances are you allowed to tell anyone outside of the Commission about this, we don't need The Guild declaring an emergency and militarising this place for nothing. I cannot believe people that I thought were elite could make such a massive mess-up of a rescue. My Serious Handler, consider yourself lucky you don't suffer anymore punishment than this. And hunter, I expected better from you to prevent this from happening at all. Out of all of this fleet, I thought you were better than this. Group dismissed.

From now until the questline is finished the Serious Handler will act as the replacement to the usual Handler. Quests can be taken as usual, though there will be of course different dialogue with the Serious Handler. In addition to this, the other members of the Commission will have different responses to the hunter if they try to talk to them, ranging from sadness to shock to disappointment and even anger in the cases of the Commander and the Admiral.

After five quests go by, the Serious Handler expresses her frustrations at the incident. Damn it! I can't believe the Commander would blame us for this whole ordeal! I couldn't fight off an Odogaron let alone whatever that thing was in the Vale, yet I get prohibited from travelling outside of the base camp under any circumstances?! And that whole thing about us magically coming up with the perfect plan to get through those boulders blocking that area is just crazy. Would the Guild REALLY declare an emergency over two people getting hurt? No, no, no. Sorry about that, I rarely get this mad.. but this is absurd. What is he thinking, does he not know this will harm our safety rather than protect it? Well, know what, I can't do this anymore. I won't sit here idly and let this nonsence continue! We must show him that we are reliable enough on our own! In fact, we can start right now! Remember the Guild Knights who came here to hunt down a Brute Tigrex? You won't like the sound of this, but we have to go and help those Guild Knights. Its been two days already, and not a single word has come back from them. Hunter, I fear that the thing from the Rotten Vale may have something to do with their delay. I don't care what happens to us, we have to break the Commander's orders otherwise we WILL have an emergency on our hands, and if that happens... the Research Commission may be withdrawn from the New World! Our permits to engage in hunting duties would be certainly revoked! Hunter, whenever you are ready, accept the quest "To Find A Black Scaled Foe" and meet me at the Wildspire Waste. I fear, that should we undertake this, it'll be a while before we can return to Astera. All hopes that won't happen.

The Serious Handler and hunter crouch their way to Area 9 and find three Guild Knights fighting the Brute Tigrex they have been sent to eliminate. It is clear something has happened, as what would be a large group is missing and the three look to be tired. Why would our captain leave us to this thing?!, Can't... keep blocking., Here's a real question, why would the commission not do anything to help us? Surely they would be willing to lend us a hunter or two!. The Brute Tigrex continues to attack the three and the Serious Handler decides to act. Quick, you've got to go and he-, before finishing her sentence the Brute Tigrex knocks down the exhausted and overheated knight, Oh no.... The Brute Tigrex slams its right claw into the knight, creating an explosion of water and mud that buries the remains of him. No! Get to them before the both of them are done for!. The hunter begins running on the Serious Handler's command, staring down towards the conflict head on. You won't get the best of me!, the knight with the Gunlance shouts, while his partner with dual blades isn't so eager, He doesn't care about us, he just used us as a distraction to get this thing away from the other one! This is just suic-agggh!. The Brute Tigrex bites into the knight, slams him to the floor two times and tosses him away into deep water. Now only one remains, and the hunter goes full speed. The Brute Tigrex and the last knight slam and stab at each other, with the knight getting a wyvernfire off in its face that manages to wound the Brute's head. It just takes one spin unfortunately to knock the knight onto a rocky slab and disarmed. The hunter is almost there. The Brute Tigrex slowly crawls its way to the knight, its eyes glowing red with rage. The knight shouts, Aw I'm done for ain't I, the Research Commission can-. The Brute Tigrex unleashes a savage roar, shredding apart the rocky slab and sending the last of the three flying away out of sight behind a pile of rocks. The hunter, now having reached the Brute Tigrex leaps and stabs into it with their Hunting Knife. The Brute yells in pain and rage, shaking around violently until the hunter is thrown off and comes to a stand on another rock slab. The Brute Tigrex becomes fully enraged and unleashes another savage roar as the hunter and Brute fight.

The two of them fight and eventually the Brute Tigrex is forced to fly off injured. The Serious Handler and the hunter meet up again at the Area 6 crossing over to Area 8. Those poor knights never stood a chance against that thing! I never, thought I'd ever have to see someone die from a monster like that. And they say of another thing being present here. This is worse than I could of thought.. She spots the Brute Tigrex in the centre of the area limping across, then spitting out a broken Switch Axe onto the sands. Augh! It got another!. The Serious Handler's yell of disgust and shock catches the Brute Tigrexes attention. The wyvern turns towards the two and looks ready to charge. The Serious Handler says one thing Should have taken one of your weapons, I feel like joining in on the action.. The Brute charges two paces, before a black figure erupts from the sinkhole and rams its head into its back. The both of the team emit a gasp as a Tempered Black Diablos sinks its horns right through the Brute Tigrexes back to the other end. As the Brute's head falls the Black Diablos throws the Brute into a spire, breaking it along with the Brute Tigrexes life. The Serious Handler shouts out to the hunter who is running in to the danger, That Black Diablos must be the reason why the knights have split up! I'm going to go look for the others, and what ever you do, if any others happen to appear, do NOT let any more of them be lost!. The Black Diablos swipes away rubble from the spire before it roars at the hunter, beginning the second hunt.

After it is near death, the Black Diablos will break down the boulder wall blocking Area 12 from the reach of Area 8 and another cutscene will begin.

Obsidian Deviljho Second Preview Appearance

Worse Than Failure: Wildspire Waste: Area 12

The hunter and Serious Handler run to the area after the Black Diablos, and find a scene of horror. The Guild Knights had gathered here as a temporary base, and it has been completely destroyed. Smoke fills the small room, and fires continue to light among the crystals on the floor. And the worst of all, broken pieces of armour and weapons lay close together. The truth is revealed, many of the knights did not survive the attack. The Black Diablos wanders around to the two and lifts its head up with a threatening glare. The hunter shows concern for the Serious Handler, but she refuses to leave. No, I'm not backing away from this massacre demon.. She retrieves an intact Sword and Shield and holds it up, I am with you!. Before they can pair up, a loud crash and a billow of smoke rushes in through from Area 11 and blinds everything. As the hunter and Serious Handler try to look, they can only see a blackened figure attack the Black Diablos, easily bringing it to the ground. As it tries to get up, the figure breathes a stream of fire, but even that is not enough to show its true form, only a brief silhouette. The flames blaze through the area, lighting up more fires and engulfing the Black Diablos. Normally one would not take much care to fire, but due to its injuries the pain is immense and it backs towards the small pit to the side. The figure picks up the Black Diablos and without much clear effort hurls it into the ceiling. With deafening noise the ceiling around the place comes crashing down, crushing and burying the Black Diablos in the pit with a wave of smoke and fire. After this, the figure leaves. The hunter and Serious Handler look at the state of the area as the smoke clears, all the Guild Knights and both monsters are dead.

The two walk into Area 11 where they saw the figure leaving and see nothing but rubble and a still lingering but light smoke. The mysterious monster has escaped again. The Serious Handler is in a seriously bad mood, It got away again! Agghh! We were so freaking close to finding what it is! And now the Guild Knight squad are all gone! All of them! If only that arrogant Scatternut of a Commander not restricted us we could have gotten here and saved them! This is all his fault!. A voice entering the area suddenly counters, The only one at fault for this, is you.. It is the Commander, accompanied by several anonymous members of the Commission. The Serious Handler attempts to speak, Look Commander, this is a really bad situation but be assured that we both are safe and-, Save your words for later! If you two want to keep yourselves safe you will show me everything that has happened right here and now.. The Serious Handler only answers simply, Uhh, fine.. then.. Several scenes occur, where the hunter, Serious Handler, and the Commander with his guards go around the locale and view what has happened. Each discovery leaves the Commander even angrier than before, with some of the Commission guards becoming sickened from the amount of remains they find, shown when two of them dig out one of the three knights killed at the beginning from the swamp. The concluding image is the Commander holding the medallion of the Guild Knight Squad's captain, lying out of frame at the bottom of Area 14, who had been killed by the Black Diablos.

The scene continues in Area 1, where they are all at the gate to Astera. The Commander and his guards are in front of the entrance, and it is very clear that the hunter and Serious Handler are in for severe trouble. I am almost devoid of words that can describe this. You two dared disobey a direct order from me. An order that I gave to protect you both from suffering the same fate as your partners! And it isn't just that act either! Instead of waiting out the penalty, you tried going in there to help them... AND EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM ARE DEAD!! YOU CONTRIBUTED TO THE DEATHS OF AN ENTIRE GROUP OF GUILD KNIGHTS WITH YOUR ACTIONS!!. The Serious Handler isn't having any of this anymore, WHAT WERE WE MEANT TO DO?!! Just sit there in Astera and let those monsters tear them apart?! They had no chance of fending off two hyper aggressive Tempered monsters! Not even that many knights could handle those odds! AND NOW YOU BLAME US FOR SOMEHOW LETTING THEM DIE?!! Have you gone insane?!. ENOOOUGH!!. The area goes quiet from the Commander's shout. You have no idea how severe the penalties are for failing to prevent the deaths of official Guild Protectors! What you allowed to happened... will condemn the entire Research Commission! And if there's something I want to keep, it's the members of the team who give a damn!. The Serious Handler continues her aggression, Stop it! Just stop it! How could you think that we will be held responsible for the deaths of the group when YOU said no one would be helping! Don't make this any worse than it already is! Use some sense damn it!. The Commander immediately responds, I already did. These guard's lead by myself were going in to assist them. A perfectly acceptable response, not what you were!. The Serious Handler is infuriated, What?! You literally just told us you don't have the manpower to provide assistance! In fact, why wasn't any assistance given anyway?! We know clear as crystal just how dangerous and unpredictable this place can be, you could have sent people! You could have sent us!. The Commander then gives a hand signal, Guards, take her back to Astera to await her sentence.. But the Serious Handler has reached her limit, THAT'S IT!!. Unsheathing the sword she collected and hid away from the Commander's sight she points the blade at the guards as they pull out their own weapons. The hunter is taken aback by this and backs off from them. The Commander notices the hunter moving, Don't let the hunter get away!. The Serious Hunter swings her blade as they try to approach him/her and one of the guards clashes their blade on her's. A struggle ensues, and quickly the hunter must think of a non-lethal method of dealing with the situation. Stop resisting! the Commander demands over the sounds of the guards forming a plan and the strained grunts of the Serious Handler trying her best to overpower her attacker. The other guards attempt to subdue the Serious Handler, as the hunter sees a Paratoad walking by. The guard clashing with the Serious Handler wears a full helmet, not well crafted in design that prevents him from speaking and seeing her correctly. And neither is he actually trained for the job at all, only serving as a resource giver for the others. These flaws eventually show as after a few more seconds of effort the Serious Handler shows that her experiences in the field have made her strong and agile for someone not a hunter. And gritting her teeth with one last big push she breaks the guard's defence and her strength built up from the strain is unleashed in a upwards slash as she lets out a scream. The guard is knocked to the ground as his chest-piece is slashed open and his helmet has has its mask completely severed off. The other guards rush the Serious Handler, and before anything truly horrific happens the hunter chucks the Paratoad into their path. The toad sprays its neurotoxic gas around itself, stopping them all in their tracks, and with all but two collapsing from becoming paralysed. The Serious Handler is so enraged now she is ready to actually attack the Commander, but the hunter holds her back. If she was to cut down him, then regardless of their situation the both of them would be branded as murderers deserving of execution by elite Guild Knights.

It doesn't matter though, as the Commander has witnessed enough. So this is what it has come to be! I once thought you were the best the Commission had to offer. You repelled Zorah Magdaros, the hunter slew Xeno'jiiva, completed tasks thought impossible, and saved your team members an extraordinary amount of times. But what you have done has undone everything! First your partners are left to get injured, next you disobey my order, you fail to prevent any deaths of the Guild Knights, and now, you directly assault members of your own team! Even an attempt on me! That... was your final mistake! Effective immediately... you both are BANISHED from the Research Commission and all its branches! You have betrayed everyone who signed up under the oath of teamwork, the very foundation of us! You went out on the field with weaponry that only a hunter is permitted to use!. The Serious Handler speaks her reply to this announcement, Banished? Know what, I don't care anymore! If I never have to see you again, that will be a joy! I thought you people would give me a life I wasn't allowed to experience, and you've turned me into a freaking criminal. She runs off in her anguish, the Commander then finishes his long ranting. As for you, I'll find a replacement for you easily, and your Handler? She will be the partner of the A-lister from now on! And one last thing! If you ever take one step into Astera again I will have you both sent back to the Old World to face your punishment at the hands of the Guild! It would be better for you to die in the wilds you've been in so many times than face brutal Guild Persecution! NOW GET OUT OF HERE!!. With a look of despair, the hunter runs off with the Serious Handler off into the distance, knowing that the names of "hunter" and "handler" are no longer recognised for them.

After the banishment

It is a terrible turn of events. Both the Serious Handler and the hunter have both been banished from the Research Commission for their actions. They run, eventually reaching an old camp in the Great Ravine, the one that had been used during the failed capture of Zorah Magdaros. This is where they will have to stay for now.

The scene then fades into the place at night, where the hunter has their hand over their face while the Serious Handler is just recovering from crying. She sits next to the hunter and begins talking about it, Not many people have been me like this, nobody from there. I've always tried to be strong-willed and not let myself be taken over by emotion. But... these past few days have just been too much! Our partners still lie injured, a squad of people die, and now... Now we have to fend for ourselves out here. I hate this. This, this was all my fault. You may remember what I told you once when you came to visit me in the Living Quarters. I ran away, just like this. I ran away from my family who forced me to never leave the home around me out of fear that they would lose me. I left them for the Research Commission. Now I've been kicked out, for standing up for myself against a decision that was wrong and unjustified!. She gets up and walks to the entrance, holding the sword from before. He thought a Handler is unsuited to even hold a weapon. But it was me who held them away from you! I was even strong enough to defeat that guy on my own! In fact, if I got more training I could be as suited to be a hunter, like you. And telling what we did manage to do together, we can survive this! This place was left abandoned after a failure, never to be used again. Like us, it will be returned back to usefulness in helping us continuing to cull the dangers of the New World, even without the Commission's interference..

The base camp for the Great Ravine will act as the home area for the remainder of the questline. It contain places for forging and crafting equipment, and the Serious Handler still acts as a quest-giver. Some facilities, like managing investigations, your Palico being stuck in Astera, and multiplayer can only be activated by travelling to another player's session.

Seven quests will go by from this place, acting as if a week has gone by and now the Serious Handler has made a discovery, One week. We managed to survive out here for one week. We will prove their claims that we will be killed out here false! Anyways, I have some important information I managed to think up. I have thought out a pathway for where our mysterious monster, the one behind all our problems, is headed next. As you know, we first encountered it in the Rotten Vale. Then, it appeared in the Wildspire Waste. And considering how much time has passed, I've come to be conclusion the monster is going in a circling path. So very soon, it will arrive in the Coral Highlands! Hunter, that will be our next destination. We need to at least know what the monster is. Hopefully we can stop it right then and there. I'm putting up the quest for this, and the Zenny left here will be enough as a reward.

The quest, "At The Underbelly Between Life And Death" will become available.

Shamos, Paolumu, Legiana, Obsidian Deviljho(Not considered as present in-game)

I have planned where the monster will be headed next, into the Coral Highlands. We've got to stop this thing before it causes even more damage to the life we've come to know in the New World. (Fainting during this quest is an instant fail.)

{{{Notes}}}

Upon arriving down from the base camp into Area 1, the signs are instantly there. Something has been here. Shamos lie dead and eaten along the floor and Endemic Life is nowhere to be seen. Sounds of crumbling and screeches can be heard above. The Serious Handler reacts, Oh dear, it's already here! Quickly! We've got to get above before it's too late!. The hunter runs up the Coral Highlands, across the pathway through Area 2, 4 to 5. Other pathways are blocked by boulders from collapsed pieces of coral and rock. Smoke and embers can be seen rising from the scenery as Raphinos fly away into the clouds in fear. More dead Shamos and the burnt and eaten body of a Tzitzi-Ya-Ku can be found in Area 4. Eventually they make it to Area 5, where the smoke is beginning to seep in. The Serious Handler comments on the situation, It's, its destroying everything! It must be up above, but how do we get up there with that rubble in the way?. Suddenly a smouldering Paolumu with its parts wounded comes crashing down into the area and almost hits them both. It slowly gets up, and from its burns it is furious, roaring at the hunter. I think you can deal with that, I'll try and find a way up!.

The hunter fights and slays the Paolumu, and upon that happening the hunter is alerted to a stressful sight. Hunter! Help! It came from above and has me held tight!. A life-bar for the Serious Handler is shown. Use whatever you can, but don't let that thing drop me, and don't attack it by its legs! If I fall there's no chance of me surviving!. The hunter has to use Bomb Pods that have dropped in from falling rubble to shoot at the Legiana. If the Legiana is hit in the legs or the hunter takes too long to complete the section, the Legiana will drop the Serious Handler. From a moderate or short height, the Serious Handler will lose either a quarter or half the life-bar. The Legiana will instantly swoop down and pick her back up if she survives. If she is dropped from a great height, the section isn't done in time or the life-bar reaches zero, the Serious Handler succumbs to her injuries, failing the quest and essentially dooming the hunter to death in these wilds. Her reactions to losing health are follows:

  • 75% Health: No! AHH!! It dropped me! Please hunter, hit its head and wings, but DO NOT its legs!
  • 50% Health: AAHAH!! This pain is unbearable! Hunter, shoot it down before it drops me from a height too far!
  • 25% Health: Ugh! I... I can't take another fall... like that. If it drops me again, I'm done.
  • 0% Health: AAA-ahahh... The scene shows the hunter go to the Serious Handler as she lies, the Legiana takes aloft and flies away. Hunter... why... couldn't you... just shoot it down..... The Serious Handler passes away as the boulder wall above gives way as a figure advances. The hunter lets out a yell as if they'd been hit by a heavy attack, as the camera pans upwards into black with the figure walking towards them. The reward screen pops up and the quest is considered failed.

When the Legiana is flinched three times it will begin to lose balance. The Serious Handler signals, Now! Use your Slinger's hook before it goes back up!. A prompt appears to hook onto Legiana, which the hunter must do otherwise they restart the process again. Upon hooking onto Legiana the wyvern panics and begins to fly around. The Serious Handler warns, You've got to bring it down hunter. Swing if it tries to shake us off, and makes sure to use that Hunting Knife if it thinks about dropping me!. Just as the Serious Handler said, the hunter has to use swings to prevent the Legiana from knocking them off it. If their stamina drops to zero they fall off the Legiana and restart the previous section. If they fall more than three times the hunter and Serious Handler are dropped and the quest fails.

Dialogue for falling off

  • Damn it! You can't develop air-sickness at a time like this! Ugh! Now you'll have to shoot it down again! - First time falling off
  • As I said before, swing around if it starts doing fast movements, and don't let it drop me! - 1st Reminder
  • Are you freaking kidding me! Stop messing around and as I say correctly this time! - Second time falling off
  • You're not going to fall off if you swing against the Legiana, hunter! It'll only stop it from flailing about! Now don't fall again! Also, don't let it happen to me! - 2nd Reminder
  • WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!! You're going to get us both killed at this rate! Shoot it down and actually try to disrupt it! - Third time falling off
  • I won't say it again! Don't stick around if it spins! Swing like a Kecha Wacha and bring it off balance! That monster isn't going to let you redo this again! - 3rd Reminder
  • If the hunter fails a fourth time a cutscene plays out where the Legiana shakes its neck from the sting of the hook, and the hunter clings onto the Serious Handler's legs. She isn't having this No stop it! Get back up there before we both die!. The Legiana has had enough of this game, and bites through the rope of the hook. As the Legiana flies above the deathly depths below dipping its talons, the Serious Handler says one last thing, I hate you.. The Legiana drops both the Serious Handler and the hunter both screaming into the Rotten Vale. As the hunter is obscured by the rotten gas, the scene goes to black and the quest is failed.

If the hunter is unsuccessful in preventing the Serious Handler from being dropped there is another scene for this where the Serious Handler desperately tries to snag her clothing on the talons to stay on. Waah! Why didn't you do anything hunter! Why didn't you-AHHHHHH!!. The hunter makes a yell of anguish as the Serious Handler is dropped into the Rotten Vale below. They are then thrown from the Legiana to a coral flower overlooking where she fell. They crawl to see, only to hear a faint thud from the depths. The hunter clutches their face in their hands as the scene turns to black and the quest is failed.

Should the hunter do as the Serious Handler says, which is actually quite easy, meaning that hunters have to maliciously ignore the advice to get the failure cutscenes, the quest goes into a cutscene.

Obsidian Deviljho Reveal Appearance

Showing A Hidden Face: Coral Highlands: Area 6

The Legiana screeches as the hunter continues to swipe at it with their Hunting Knife. The wyvern crashes through a decaying coral flower in a narrow area and begins to finally lose altitude. The Serious Handler remarks, You're doing it! A couple more seconds and we'll be free!. Suddenly, from the now smoking Area 5, a boulder is sent flying towards the Legiana. It strikes it in its right leg and tail, breaking the bones in both parts. The Serious Handler lets out a cry of terror as the Legiana begins to lose grip on her. The Legiana is close enough to a deep gap between areas where it would be safe for her to fall. The hunter's knife is dropped as the Legiana tries to climb higher. The Serious Handler catches it and hacks through the talons with one hard swing. She is freed and falls onto the coral sprouts below. The hunter is clinging on for dear life as the Legiana goes crazy from the combined pain of its broken leg and tail, the hook slicing into its neck, and the talons on its other leg having been cut off. A figure appears in the smoke and breathes fire at the Legiana. The hunter is forced to let go as it bursts into flame and begins spinning into the depths of the Rotten Vale below. A damaged and burning piece of coral, bordered by rocks from above comes loose and the hunter and Serious Handler are forced to make an urgent slide down the coral spout tunnel as the rubble and smoke crash into the place.

The both of them roll to a stop as the smoke stops and obscures on the end of the tunnel. The Serious Handler tries to talk about the situation, Isn't this just our luck? We go after the monster tearing this whole place apart, and the locals decide that we're more important than it! Oh great! How are we going to-. A sound of something landing is heard in the tunnel, followed by heavy footsteps. Hunter, our monster has finally decided to show itself. Get ready!. The hunter draws their weapon as the figure comes into sight, closer and closer. Until it rises its head out of the smoke and is revealed to be, A Deviljho?! Wait no! It's as black as coal! This an Obsidian Deviljho!. The Subspecies of Deviljho, the Obsidian Deviljho, has appeared in the New World, and the hunter and Serious Handler are the first ones to see it. The Obsidian Jho is clearly not happy with the both of them and almost immediately go after them when a Raphinos rolls into the area, carrying along with it a Gajalaka. The Gajalaka is missing any kind of weapons. It's unarmed!. The Gajalaka recovers to see a giant dark beast set alight to its mount, the Raphinos emits a shrill screech as it is burned to ashes. The Obsidian Deviljho begins to slowly walk towards it, emitting a loud growl. The Gajalaka runs off yelling in its own language. The Obsidian Deviljho comes in close and misses a quick bite as the Gajalaka runs in zig-zags, the Obsidian Deviljho gets annoyed and sweeps its jaw. The Gajalaka is thrown into a corner... and the hunter's weapon is knocked away and lodged into a pillar stuck out of reach. The Serious Handler and hunter become worried, Oh no! Not now!. The Gajalaka starts screaming gibberish as the Obsidian Deviljho looms over it, with no chance of escape. It throws its arms in the air as the Obsidian Jho's maw opens, an attempt to surrender. The monster doesn't understand nor accept surrender, and the Gajalaka is lifted up in the Obsidian Deviljho's jaws. With a long drawn out yell of terror the Gajalaka is chomped by the Obsidian Deviljho as the both of the humans watch in shock, and with a second chomp to swallow, the Gajalaka is no more. The Serious Handler emits the worst possible thing imaginable for the situation, Hunter... I forgot to bring my blade!. The Obsidian Deviljho turns towards them both.

Without any means to combat the Obsidian Deviljho the scene turns into one mimicking the Rancor scene in Return Of The Jedi. The Serious Handler desperately tries to get the hunter's weapon loose, but it is well stuck. Pulling doesn't do anything and the Obsidian Deviljho begins to slowly advance towards her. She's gives up, and turns around to the Jho eyeing her down with fangs closing in. The hunter must do something to prevent the monster from reaching her, and notices a rock pile nearby. The Serious Handler lets out a scream as the monster prepares to bite, but is sent howling backwards as a rock hits it directly in the right eye. She manages to get away in time, right as it drags its jaw through the ceiling, bringing rocks down around the only escape route. The Obsidian Deviljho angrily stomps towards the hunter, now faster from more space for it to walk upwards. Both hunter and Serious Handler try throwing things at the Obsidian Deviljho, but it is too well defenced to be repelled by mere rocks and coral shards. The Jho does its own throw, with a large rock that the hunter barely dodges in time, the rock instead becomes lodged in a piece of coral root. With nowhere to go, they are both forced into an enclosed space. The place is filled with shallow water, and completely bordered by coral and rocks. It is a death trap. The hunter notices a vine coming down from the area above and tries climbing up it to escape. The Serious Handler can only signal to try and stop them, but it's too late, the Obsidian Jho rips the hunter and vine down to the floor. The hunter tries running and is pinned in a corner. As the Obsidian Deviljho is inches away from a chomp the Serious Handler throws an oyster attached to a large sticky plant that had been knocked down by the Jho. The plant becomes stuck in the Jho's fangs, and it goes wild trying to get it out. The two avoid the Obsidian Jho's sweeps and stomps, until it has had enough. The Obsidian Deviljho unleashes a stream of fire, burning through the plant and oyster with ease. The Jho is however so angry by now it continues breathing fire around the place, setting the coral and a second missed vine on fire. The toss took all of the Serious Handler's strength, and she isn't able to run in time to escape being knocked down. Using the last remnants of her energy gained only out of desperation she manages to stab the Obsidian Deviljho in the foot with a broken shard of rock. In pain the Obsidian Deviljho stomps. The hunter is knocked down by the quake of the stomp, and sees the Serious Handler be thrown across the room next to them. She is unconscious. It goes for her yet again. Another oyster is seen although long dead, and with only half a second to spare the hunter throws the still intact pearl at the Obsidian Deviljho's face. The impact sends it into another rampage, this time striking at core pillars of rock around the area. Much of the ceiling comes down, engulfing the area in dust and embers. A lot of the borders around the last remaining section are destroyed. With no space left the hunter is forced onto what remains of the bordering wall of dead coral, and the Obsidian Deviljho begins walking towards them again.

It is a nightmare, the hunter, with his/her companion lying unconscious covered in dust and rubble, stands in a smoking fiery underbelly of what is supposed to be one of the most beautiful places in the world, facing what appears to be certain death at the jaws of the monster that had caused them so much pain. All looks hopeless, the Obsidian Deviljho emits a full fledged roar as its mouth alights with fire, staring down at the hunter. Then the hunter sees it, the rock that the Obsidian Deviljho had tossed earlier is still stuck in the rock, and it is growing right above a greatly weakened pillar of rock, the final one left. Upon noticing this they load a piece of coral into their Slinger and fire it at the rock. The hunter shields themselves as the Obsidian Deviljho goes for a blazing, killing chomp. The rock being struck triggers the pillar to give way. The Obsidian Deviljho is hit by the falling pillar the moment as its fangs reach the hunter. Instead of the hunter's death, the Obsidian Deviljho is pushed right over the hunter, who has to jump out of the way of the Jho's bulk. The Obsidian Deviljho's sure victory is turned into defeat in a matter of seconds. It falls through the piece of coral the hunter was standing on a few moments before and breaks it. The Obsidian Deviljho howls in shock and rage as it is sent falling off the area, seemingly to its death. The hunter takes heavy breathes of relief, the battle is over.

They notice that their weapon is still intact, having been broken free of the pillar that no longer exists. The weapon is retrieved, and the next matter is the Serious Handler. She awakens and looks towards the hunter, We're alive. Wait? Where is the Deviljho?. The hunter gives a nod. It... it fell off the cliff?! she shouts, running to the edge to see. She see's the pile of rubble of the pillar, and a dark figure within. We, we did it. Even with no weapons we brought down this-. The figure emerges from the rubble, throwing its head upward and stumbles to a stand. The look on the two's face is that of horror. The Obsidian Deviljho roars at them, and walks down a path down into the Rotten Vale, disappearing from them yet again.

The Serious Handler and hunter give one look at each other before leaving the area now in ruin through the now viewable tunnel.

Preparation for the concluding hunt

Before the quest is given to hunt the Obsidian Deviljho, the Serious Handler does one last talk. That monster had us both trapped down there without any weapons to fight back. Yet still, we both made it out alive. Only you could have saved me from that thing, AND manage to send a ravenous monster falling off the area using only your Slinger and a piece of coral with all escape blocked! I knew about your achievements, but seeing them myself, it is amazing! If this is what your adventures were like, I envy you. I do apologise for failing to come prepared for that, but that won't be happening again. None of this must happen again. Our success is as much as I hate to confirm it, temporary. The Coral Highlands has still been ravaged by that Obsidian Deviljho's mindless rampaging. And now that it has been thrown back into the Rotten Vale chances are that... oh no. Hunter, I believe the Obsidian Deviljho is now heading to its final destination, the Elder's Recess. What you did is extraordinary, but it also means that it will now want to travel to the place to rebuild its strength. Obsidian Deviljho love volcanic areas for their vast supplies of heat and ore veins to feed upon and maintain their sturdiness. The Elder's Recess not only has a plentiful supply of those things, that but bio-energy on top of that. All of that combined will make that Obsidian Deviljho near unstoppable! We have no choice. We have to go to the Elder's Recess and put an end to its destruction. I worry, because there is the high possibility the Commission will arrive, and I have as little idea as you how we would sort that out. But if we don't do anything the Obsidian Deviljho will become too powerful for anyone to stop! It's you and me. I won't be on the sidelines any longer, not when it's against the monster that started all this. Both of us deserve payback, just trust me on this! Bringing a stop to this terror will be the best we can do for the New World! Now hunter, let's get ready to end this!

The finale of the questline, Obsidian Jaws Of Travesty will then become available. The Serious Handler also equips herself in a custom armor should hunters not immediately choose to do the quest and clear it. The armor will also be worn during the actual quest.

The hunter and Serious Handler start out in the base camp right above Area 12, where they have noticed boulders already block many of the pathways of the locale. It's almost like it wants us to come to it. Come on, it must be close by.. The Serious Handler and the hunter jump down into the fiery area, where the cutscene for the Obsidian Deviljho's introduction plays.

Obsidian Deviljho Introduction Cutscene

An Nemesis In Obsidian: Elder's Recess: Area 12

The two walk around and look for the Obsidian Deviljho, but nothing can be found. Soon it becomes apparent that they have been trapped in the area by boulders again. The hunter and Serious Handler walk to the wall that seals off normal monsters from getting into the Stra dragon's nest. It shows signs of having been replaced, with the lava dripping off it highlighting the lumps and cracks. Just a rock should be enough to do it. the Serious Handler signals. The hunter shoots a rock at the wall, and it bursts apart. A deep roar is emitted as a head tears through and emerges out in a blaze of smoke and fire. The Obsidian Deviljho has appeared, triggering the World style cutscene name and icon to appear. Both the hunter and Serious Handler draw their weapons as the Obsidian Deviljho walks towards them. Once the realisation it that they are the same ones that escaped and knocked it off the Coral Highlands, it roars directly at the two and begins the hunt.

The Serious Handler actually fights alongside the hunter during this quest, meaning she also has to be protected from having her health-bar drop to zero or she dies, failing the quest. She is able to use Sword and Shield attacks, including comboes and makes use of her Slinger. Additionally she can even use items to heal herself, may use bombs if the hunter has them in their inventory and sometimes use Lifepowders to heal the hunter and herself if the hunter drops low on health.

Quest Cutscene 1

The Obsidian Deviljho goes to Area 9 as the two of them give chase. As they try to attack it the Obsidian Jho moves behind them and rips the earth from below their feet, knocking them to the floor. The Obsidian Deviljho rears its head up above the hunter, when suddenly a pellet explodes on its face, destroying the rock it had. The hunter and Serious Handler look to see a group of Gajalaka readying up a large moving turret. A strange looking one mumbles something from under a mask and the turret rains shots upon the Obsidian Deviljho, battering it long enough for the two to get back up and out of its way. The Obsidian Deviljho stomps towards the Gajalaka's, and with one Mega Chomp destroys their turret. The others look in surprise as the strange looking one has their mask broken, and the hunter and Serious Handler gasp. Oh that is NOT good! Huh.. Oh hey guys!. It is the Handler, fully recovered from the incident. As they speak the Gajalaka manage to force the Obsidian Deviljho away with their pellet-guns, making it tear down the barrier into Area 8 and move down there.

The Serious Handler is the one to ask the question, What are you doing here? You were injured!. The Handler answers, Well.... you see the Commander and a few others saw what happened in the Coral Highlands, but the monster got away from them before they could stop it! So he's launched a tactical hunt here to ensure it doesn't get out alive! Kinda a bummer that it's just a burnt pickle after all.... Hold on, the Commander's here?!, the Serious Handler says beginning to feel anxious. Yeah! He thought of bringing his Dragonator here for maximum firepower! Until he came up with a boring way... Sorry, gotta go!. The Handler runs off and the hunter and Serious Handler are both happy and worried at the same time. Your Handler is okay and well and all, but let's talk about the real concern here. The Commission is already here! And worst of all, the Commander is here too! If he sees us, he'll have us arrested and sent back to Astera while THEY try to deal with the Obsidian Deviljho! You can know for sure I'm not letting them take our target away from us! Let's get back in there and continue our hunt!. The hunter and Serious Handler then proceed into Area 8 to continue hunting the Obsidian Deviljho.

Obsidian Deviljho at 50% health

  • Serious Handler: Looks like we've given it our all and it's showing. Judging by its wounds it must be at least half way done.
  • Serious Handler: Hunter, quick! It's moving again, and fast! We can't let it get away!

Quest Cutscene 2

The Obsidian Deviljho walks fast in a rage through Area 2, stomping towards what appears to be the base camp. The Serious Handler and hunter reach the clearing and see it getting close. It's approaching the camp! We've got to stop this thing or it's all over!. The two run as fast as they can, but all appears to be lost as the Obsidian Deviljho is just mere steps away from rampaging through into the camp and breaking its way out. A familiar voice from within shouts, Now!. A Flash Pod blinds the Obsidian Deviljho, while a rock hits a device on a net above. It releases its cargo, bombs filled with compressed water and ice burst open on the Obsidian Deviljho. It emits screeches of pain as the elements cover it, reacting badly with its scales and cooling it to an agonisingly low temperature. The Obsidian Deviljho collapses to the floor, showing the two behind it, and the Commander faces them down.

Could they be?, the Serious Handler swallows her fears and just looks, knowing she has no chance of remaining hidden now. It's them Commander! They were fighting the monster too!, the Handler's cheerful attitude gives them both away. The Commander is stern, So, not even banishment prevents you from interfering from Commission business. Got to say you've got quite a hell of a nerve! We can deal with this without your assistance, now go.. or face your fate!. The Serious Handler gives a grudge filled response, That is no problem for us. We were well on our way to defeating it before you turned up! Are you going to kill us for helping again?!. You're lucky to still be alive after what you did to him!, the Commander points to the Commission Guard Aider, the Guard that the Serious Handler had clashed with during their attempted arrest. He walks towards next to the Commander, his face showing what anger he has towards them for ruining his armour. But before he can speak, the Obsidian Deviljho's eyes open.

Obsidian Deviljho enters Blaze State

The Obsidian Deviljho begins shaking on the ground, with its colours of rage beginning to switch between each other rapidly.

The Commander signals, Guards, the monster is still alive! Aider, get those two before it gets back up! The Aider jumps in and runs towards the Serious Handler, attempting to restrain her. This time he succeeds, holding her down as she struggles to get free. The hunter doesn't know what to do, looking at both the Commander and the Serious Handler and Aider on the ground. The Aider speaks his first words to her, Serious Handler? You've been a serious pain in the ass for us! And now you're gonna get what you deserve!. The Obsidian Deviljho rises up, its colours now changing so much that they are becoming like one, and with one last vibration the Obsidian Deviljho rises its head up and emits a deafening roar. A burst of energy combined of Fire and Dragon emits from the Obsidian Deviljho. The scene distracts the Aider, and covers the seeing field of the Commander. Seizing the opportunity, the Serious Handler makes a drastic action with no other choice. She uses her sword to slash the middle of the Aider's chest, making him yell out in pain. You! What the hell did you do! My chest! That's it, I'm gonna kill you for this!. The Aider charges for the two of them when the blazing fangs from behind strike his scalp, arms, and legs. Sent flying away to the side of the wall, the Aider is put out of action.

The Obsidian Deviljho roars towards the hunter and Serious Handler, taking more of an interest towards them than getting out now. Noticing movement in the camp, the monster decides to move out again, this time to Area 6. Go! Before they follow us!, the Serious Handler demands, the two of them running after the Obsidian Deviljho. The Commander gives an order, Commission guards! The monster has became more powerful than we could have anticipated. I need you to get the Aider out of here and prepare to bring heavy firepower. I have no choice but to wait until that monster finishes off its battle with those two. Then we decide what to do!. The scene goes back out to the Serious Handler's reaction to the situation, It's no good, he's gone completely mad. We have to finish off that Obsidian Deviljho and then get out of here! And by the looks of things, its gotten so angry that it has become even stronger! There it is, it's like the Fire and Dragon energies have merged. I've never read about any Obsidian Deviljho being able to do that, we'll make sure it doesn't get to use it on the New World! Hunter, let's end this fight!. The Serious Handler and hunter go in to Area 6 to battle the Obsidian Deviljho, now in its Blaze State.

Obsidian Deviljho at 25% health

  • Serious Handler: Phew. This is starting to get tiring. It's on the move again, hopefully not much is left to go.

Quest Cutscene 3

The hunter and Serious Handler make it down to Area 7, but they see nothing in there. The Serious Handler tries looking for it, It's gone, but there's no paths where it could have escaped from here.. She turns around to find an open jaw descending on her. The Serious Handler is knocked down as the Obsidian Deviljho does its Mega Chomp, barely missing her. The Obsidian Jho then swings its head into her, disarming her of her Sword and Shield. She screams as the Obsidian Jho smashes its jaw onto her several times, breaking apart her armour. The hunter yells out and tries to go in and rescue her, only to be put down by a wave of rubble by the Obsidian Deviljho's tail. It stomps on the Serious Handler's shield, obliterating it and leaving her near defenceless. As she attempts to get up, the Obsidian Deviljho uppercuts her with a movement of its fiery maw. The Serious Handler can only make a mere gasp as she lands to the floor, the hunter looking on in horror, trying to free themselves from a rock on them. Her armour-plating is destroyed and burnt rips are present elsewhere. She is too much in pain to stand. The Obsidian Deviljho overlooks her like a shadow of death, opening up its maw, ready for a cremating blast of Blaze. The hunter yells out again as they get free, and look too late to save the Serious Handler.

Don't touch her you walking pile of coal!, the Handler cries out above on a ledge, throwing a Scatternut into the Obsidian Deviljho's mouth. The Obsidian Jho's blaze is disrupted, blowing up in its maw. The hunter gets there, too much in fear to release what has happened and stabs the Obsidian Deviljho's left heel with their Hunting Knife. The Obsidian Deviljho howls in pain, stumbling over away from the Serious Handler as the Handler jumps in to help her.

She is given a Max Potion which heals her enough to walk again. Handler, did you just?. I just needed to help! Can't have the hunter face that beast on his/her own! Uh, where's your weapon?. It's broken my shield and armour.. The Serious Handler is then lifted up by the Handler and she begins to carry her away to a safe spot. Hunter, I'm sorry. I can't continue fighting it. You've got to do this! You have to defeat that Obsidian Deviljho for everyone!. The hunter looks on with sadness, then with anger, as the Obsidian Deviljho goes back into its Blaze State Rage Mode, now facing the hunter down it rushes past them and smashes open the barrier to Area 7, wishing to fight the hunter in the flames again. The hunter runs in, aiming to finish this once and for all.

After this cutscene the hunter will now be on their own for the remainder of the quest, though there are still character dialogue that can be heard.

Obsidian Deviljho at limping

  • The Commander: The Deviljho is wounded! Commission guards, secure the area! The monster cannot be allowed to leave the locale!
  • Serious Handler: Hunter, I believe in you! Remember what that monster has done to us. Don't give it any breathing room, press your hardest and take it down!
  • The Handler: Better take care not to get eaten now! We need you!

Obsidian Deviljho preforms Area Eruption

  • Serious Handler: Hunter, this doesn't look good. If from what we can tell from past experiences together, you can't let those boulders break!
  • Serious Handler: It's readying a massive attack, get behind a boulder!

Obsidian Deviljho is defeated

  • Serious Handler: You've done it! You've finally taken down that monster!
  • The Handler: That's what happens when you mess with us!
  • The Commander: Finally, the monster is slain. Please, come to Astera... I would wish to speak to you.

Quest finale cutscene

The hunter stands in front of the Obsidian Deviljho, who lies dead after a gruelling battle. He/she looks to the Handler in the distance calling to them, Come on! You don't want to hang around for too long!. The hunter then turns around to leave the zone, when the Handler suddenly becomes scared, Look out!. Suddenly, the hunter is dragged backwards. The Obsidian Deviljho had in fact fell unconscious. Although unable to get back up on its feet anymore, it still has one last bit of energy left in it. The hunter ends up in the Obsidian Deviljho's jaws, who despite its grave injuries is able to prevent them from escaping. The Obsidian Jho manages to get the hunter fully encased in the mouth, and its jaws ready up. PLEASE NO!! the Handler screams, the hunter closing their eyes as the upper jaws turn for the chomp.

Then, a blade pierces through the roof of its mouth and the hunter is shot out of the mouth and lands hard near the pathway up. A person slides to a stop next to them. The hunter and Handler look in amazement, the Serious Handler stands with her blade steaming from heat. The Obsidian Deviljho rises its head upwards and emits a deafening death rattle before it drops to the floor. It lies completely still, without a sign of movement or life. The tyrannical Obsidian Deviljho is dead, and the Serious Handler was the one who laid the final strike.

The Handler has already ran off to tell the others about the news. Approaching him/her, the Serious Handler addresses the hunter about the situation,Don't be disappointed hunter, you were still the one who did much of the fighting. But I have to say, I really didn't think when we came here that I'd be the one to kill it. Regardless, we've done it. That monster will never harm anyone ever again. I would be overjoyed, but now we have no choice but to return to Astera. This may well have been your last hunt. Come on. Let's not keep them waiting. The Serious Handler and hunter walk off on their journey back to Astera.

After the quest/Questline Finale

The hunter and Serious Handler slowly enter Astera at night, all appears quiet.

  • Serious Handler: Well, I guess this is it. I've never seen what Guild Knights do to people accused of defecting from orders, but I've heard they show no mercy. The Commander is sure to congratulate us on the Obsidian Deviljho being slain, but then, he's sure to hand us over to them and order us back to the Old World to face punishment. It's been a fantastic journey hunter, from Zorah Magdaros to Xeno'jiiva, and now, this is the end.
  • The Commander: The only thing that has ended was that monster's life.
  • Serious Handler: Commander! What do you mean by that?
  • The Commander: That there will be no further punishment for your actions.
  • Serious Handler: Could you mean..
  • The Commander: First of all, I would like to owe you a massive apology for banishing you from the Commission. I can never forgive myself for dismissing my, no, OUR top hunter from the fleet. I also give an apology to you, my Serious Handler also for your banishment.
  • Serious Handler: I, thought you were done with us. You said we'd be better off dead in the wilds than face Guild prosecution!
  • The Commander: I was too angry, what happened in the Wildspire was such a disaster that I thought the Commission and all that it has worked to achieve would be done for. But, then I received an urgent message from the Guild as you were both on that quest to defeat that, "Obsidian Deviljho", that changed everything about this situation. It appears in fact, that the group has committed the same crime as you did! They went off after that Brute Tigrex just to get a view of the New World, and suffered the ultimate punishment for it.
  • Serious Handler: Commander, are you saying that-
  • The Commander: You two are back on the Commission effective immediately! The Guild has cleared you of any wrong doing.
  • Serious Handler: Wow...
  • The Commander: Now that is out of the way, we would also like to congratulate you on putting an end to that Obsidian Deviljho's reign of terror. We will gladly never know what it would have done next if allowed to continue on its mindless rampage.
  • Serious Handler: I don't know how to thank you enough. Neither the forgiveness of our commander, or you, hunter. Thank you for saving the Commission once more, and me.
  • The Commander: You just took the words out of my mouth. You are hereby returned to normal duties. I hope you've not grown too attached to each other, as your partners have both made a full recovery, and been given a stern warning about their misconduct that started all this. I need you both back in action, that Obsidian Deviljho won't be the only of its kind, and reports have already came in about ones like it in the Old World too. We need you here to stop these beasts should another show up. Now, my friends, you may go now.
  • Serious Handler: So, you've gotten all healed up.
  • Excitable A-Lister: Yep! All Kulu-Ya-Kuul now!
  • Serious Handler: You're never going to grow out of those are you?
  • Excitable A-Lister: I've heard all about it, you two were thrown out of the Commission! And even as all the odds were stacked against you still kicked that monster's butt!
  • Serious Handler: It's a long story, but I'm so glad its all over.
  • Excitable A-Lister: Tell me, how did he/she finish this one off?
  • Serious Handler: Actually, it was me who killed it.
  • Excitable A-Lister: WHAT?!! You didn't tell me you could fight! That is... so awesome! We could pair up together, and we will be unstoppable!
  • Serious Handler: Don't do this again to me! If I could stop that monster, I'm more than ready to knock some sense into you!
  • Excitable A-Lister: Wah! Don't hurt me, I just got out!

The Excitable A-Lister runs away, with the Serious Handler giving a smirk to the hunter, before heading off after her crazy hunter.

  • The Handler: All well, that ends well. And don't forget that I saved you both! I'm such a hero! And a hero has a duty to do! It's time for our next adventure! Come on, partner!

The hunter shakes their head in annoyance, but also emits a slight smile that they have been allowed back into Astera, and back in the Commission. As the scene pans out the questline is completed, and the hunt continues!

  • Tired: Drools from mouth, bites will inflict Resistance Down.

Useful Information

Basic (Gen Style)

Hungry For Meat And Stone.

An Obsidian Deviljho can tear off chunks from the earth and lob them at hunters like one would do to a large monster, potentially leaving one dizzy. The black scales are hardened with fire and earth-covered obsidian that deflect weaponry, but should they be damaged their defensive capabilities are greatly reduced.

Advanced (World Style)

Obsidian Deviljho have two different elemental states they can enter depending on conditions and their attack styles. Fire boosts their melee strength and Dragon boosts their breath capabilities. If damaged enough it will merge the two together, greatly increasing in ferocity. All these states have certain weaknesses that can be used to weaken its rage.

Attacks

Obsidian Deviljho share all the base attacks used by the standard Deviljho in World.

  • Sweeping Chomps Combo: The Obsidian Deviljho will do its sweeping chomps towards a hunter, and upon the final one it will turn its head down and fling a rock at them instead of dragging its jaw. It can turn right around to throw the rock, so hunters must look out if it looks like its about to do the combo.
  • Head Swing: The Obsidian Deviljho will look to be beginning a Sweeping Chomps attack, instead the head turns further to the side and a small bite is done. Then, it will move forward and swing its head right across its front to the other side. The Obsidian Deviljho also does the attack quite quickly, meaning hunters can easily be caught unaware and struck by the Brute Wyvern's head.
  • Tail Sweep: Obsidian Deviljho slams its tail down behind it and then spins around three quarters of a circle, dragging the tail right around with it at full length.
  • Down To Gnaw: Drawing its front body back and bring its head up, the Obsidian Deviljho lunges down and bites at hunters at ground level, the third going through the ground itself and uppercutting out of it.
  • Jaw Scoop: Turning its head as if it was going to do a side bite, the Obsidian Deviljho twists it sharply and plows its jaw through the ground diagonally, unearthing a cluster of earth and pebbles that batter any hunters hit by them.
  • Stone Chunk Unearthing: The Brute Wyvern takes a step backwards and lowers its jaw to the ground. It slams the mouth through the floor and tears out a chunk of rock and keeps it in its mouth. It will use this stone chunk like it would when holding a monster in its jaws, attacking hunters with it like a bludgeon.
  • Stone Chunk Slammer: The Obsidian Deviljho will raise up its Stone Chunk and try to smash hunters with it three times while advancing towards them.
  • Stone Chunk Breakage: The Obsidian Deviljho swings its mouth up almost completely behind itself with the chunk of rock in its jaws. Then, it will turn at a hunter, take a few steps and throw its upper body and the head right down with immense force. The rock chunk is completely shattered on impact, doing huge damage and depending on the type, the fragments may occur either as one big strike, clustering off into several smaller rocks, or creates a near shockwave of shards. It may cause hunters to become Stunned.

Enraged (Fire Rage)

  • Roar (Fire Rage): The Obsidian Deviljho will roar from right to left as opposed to the left to right direction.
  • Fiery Breath: In Fire Rage, its breath becomes fiery. Although it is much shorter in range compared to the Dragon breath it is more volatile and leaves lingering flames where it strikes for a few seconds.
  • Forward Fire Breath: The Obsidian Deviljho will walk backwards and breath a stream of Fire Breath in the style of an Anjanath.
  • Fire Maw Counterattack: The Obsidian Deviljho will do the same animation as the standard Deviljho's enraged counterattack, but this one causes fire to be shot from the side where it drags its jaw and when it finishes it unearths three small rocks in front of it.
  • Double Rock Throw: The Obsidian Deviljho will dig out and throw a rock, then dig in again as the rock is mid-air and chuck out a larger, more rugged rock to follow it up. The second rock does more damage than the first and can upswing hunters at an upwards angle. This is a common combo.
  • Flaming Jaw Scoop: While in Fire Rage, the Jaw Scoop will now send out fiery earth and lava-like globs with a greater size. This will inflict hunters with Fireblight.
  • Stomp Earth-break: Whenever it stomps its foot in Fire Rage, the Obsidian Deviljho will break the earth around it, increasing its direct damage range. Hunters struck by the earth-shatter will be upswung.
  • Triple Stomp: Obsidian Deviljho will do a quick shake then stomp its right foot, then its left and then its right foot again, each creating a ground shatter.
  • Stomp Shockwave: Obsidian Deviljho raises its leg up high and stomps it with much greater force than usual. This creates a ground-rippling shockwave like Apex Deviljho. Hunter's hit directly by the stomp are sent flying backwards far with huge damage.
  • Tail Mallet: While in this rage the Obsidian Deviljho can use the movements that it would use to get a hunter off its tail as actual attacks.
  • Tail Hammer: Backing up, the Obsidian Deviljho rears up its tail and brings it around and down with force, breaking the earth around its impact. Like the Stomp Shockwave the earth can upswing hunters.
  • Stomp and Tail: It will do a wide movement and stomp, and then swing its tail around to slam into the area where the stomp hit for a double smash.
  • Fiery Bite: Obsidian Deviljho generates flames in its maw and does a fast sweeping bite at hunter, in a similar motion to Anjanath's pin attack. This bite causes Fireblight if it hits.
  • Faceplant: In a sudden move the Obsidian Deviljho will swing up its head and slam its maw directly down onto hunters. It can do this attack up to two times in a row, or three times in Blaze State.
    • Faceplant - Flaming Jaw Scoop: Instead of doing the attack again, it may occasionally chain it into a Flaming Jaw Scoop by turning its head and tearing up earth.
  • Bites Of Wreckage: The Obsidian Deviljho will open its jaw up wide and begin biting with sharp arcing motions certain to tear through the ground and unearth fiery dust. The bites become more destructive until it does a large chomp that causes a small explosion of fire from the ground.
  • Below-facing Fire Breath: The Obsidian Deviljho turns its head to look down below itself and breathes a wave of Fire Breath to burn out any hunters trying to attack its belly.
  • Fire Breath Balls: Gathering up flames the Obsidian Deviljho quickly fires up to three balls of fire breath at hunters.
  • Ground-fire Blast: The Obsidian Deviljho slams its fiery jaw into the ground, and breathes to create an AOE of fiery explosions around the head, then dragging it out.
  • Stone Chunk Variations: In Fire Rage the Obsidian Deviljho can dig up two other variants of Stone Chunks. This brings the Stone Chunks can be in "Boulder", "Axe", or "Sword".
  • Axe/Sword Chunk Slash: With its sharp edges the Stone Chunk is swung across by the Obsidian Deviljho, doing cutting damage to anything in its way. There is the possibility the Obsidian Deviljho might cut a tail off a monster in a planned out method.
  • Sword Chunk Spear: The Obsidian Deviljho raises up its Sword Stone Chunk with accuracy before stabbing it down at a hunter. If they are hit they are placed in a pinned knockdown.
  • Sword Chunk Lance: Walking backwards the Obsidian Deviljho straightens itself out and then charges at a hunter with its Sword Stone Chunk pointed directly forward. If hit, hunters are sent flying backwards. This attack can be utilised against the Obsidian Deviljho by having it charge headlong into a wall, causing it to become stuck and forcing it to discard the Stone Chunk.
  • Axe Chunk Slice Chop: The Axe Stone Chunk is swung at a short but sharp slice motion, and then is brought down hard in a chop.
  • Axe Chunk Triple Chop: The Obsidian Deviljho will use its Axe Stone Chunk to chop at hunters three times in a row, aiming with each.

Enraged (Dragon Rage)

  • Draconic Counterattack: When hit with a powerful attack in Dragon Rage, the Obsidian Deviljho will spray its Dragon breath around wildly in the direction where it faces.
  • Forward Dragon Breath: It will walk backwards in aim of a target and breath its Dragon breath forward in the style of an Anjanath. The attack lasts longer than that of the Anjanath's and can reach a huge distance before it dissipates.
  • Turning Dragon Breath: It lifts its head to the side and starts breathing Dragon Breath from one side, and then steps around while breathing Dragon Breath right around to the other in a sharp turn.
  • Dragon Breath Spread: It will prepare its Forward Dragon Breath, as it does so it begins to turn towards a hunter. The breath is launched and it then suddenly shakes its head and moves it side to side, spreading the Dragon Breath across a wide radius.
  • Upwards Dragon Breath: To deal with hunters attacking it from above, the Obsidian Deviljho breathes a quick sweep of Dragon Breath that easily travels up ledges and into the air.
  • Back-turn Dragon Breath: In a similar style to a 4th Gen G-rank Black Gravios, the Obsidian Deviljho will turn its head and breath a stream of Dragon Breath starting from its front side, and as it walks, quickly moving the way around and up to where its tail was a moment ago.
  • Dragon Breath Balls: The Obsidian Deviljho stands still and fires out three balls of Dragon Breath at hunters, often going left, centre, right like a Glavenus or Rathian, sometimes all at a single direction.

Blaze State

  • Initiating Blaze State: The Obsidian Deviljho vibrates violently, its stance drooping from the damage and its glow appears to dull out. It shakes; an orange glow appears like its Fire Rage. It shakes again; a red glow appears like its Dragon Rage. Its jaw opens up as it begins vibrating again, swapping between the two colours with every shake. The vibrating gets more intense as its head rises up. It continues until it finally ends with the colours switching so fast they appear to merge, and like that they do. The Obsidian Deviljho lets out an extended roar along with a burst of element not just of Fire or Dragon, but both. The Obsidian Deviljho has entered its Blaze State, and now the fight will become truly serious now. Should hunters be in the range of its roar, they will get the first taste of Blazeblight.
  • Roar (Blaze State): The Obsidian Deviljho will rise its head upwards in a straight diagonal movement instead of moving in an arc like the other two roar animations.
  • Both Rage States Combined: In Blaze state the Obsidian Deviljho gains the movesets of both rage states, including its melee attacks and larger breath range.
  • Blaze Breath: The Obsidian Deviljho will use the Blaze element for its breath attacks, and it is as long as the Dragon Breath and as volatile and lingering as the Fire Breath.
  • Blazing Counterattack: The Obsidian Deviljho charges its jaw through the earth and emits Blaze from the sides, then as it tears its jaw forward it flings three small rocks and breathes Blaze Breath around its front to finish.
  • Tail Spin And Sweep: The Obsidian Deviljho does its Tail Spin once, then suddenly chains it into a Tail Sweep. It will very often do this chain instead of doing its Tail Spin twice.
  • Double Stomp And Forward Blaze Breath: Obsidian Deviljho will stomp the ground with both feet once, and then rear back, possibly doing a small turn, and breathe Blaze Breath forward at hunters.
  • Faceplant And Ground-fire: The Obsidian Deviljho does its faceplant attack, and then uses the opportunity to chain the attack by breathing Blaze into the ground and causing blasts of Blaze fires around its head.
  • Heavy Tackle: Turning to its target the Obsidian Deviljho does a more leaned tackle, and then at the end of it slams its foot, jaw, and tail in that direction for a large breakage of earth. Any hunters hit by either the tackle or the earth get upswung.
  • Area Eruptor: An attack only done in Area 13 in the Elder's Recess one time only, and acts as an alternative ultimate attack in a sense. The Obsidian Deviljho will throw itself forward with its jaw in the ground, throwing out a boulder towards hunters that remains in the area. It returns to battling as normal for around 30 seconds until it resumes the attack. The boulders can be broken by the Obsidian Deviljho during that time. It will dig out two more boulders that also stay in the area. After another 30 seconds the need for these boulders are revealed as the main phase of the attack begins. The camera pans out a bit as Obsidian Deviljho slowly swings its head up with a great surge of energy in its jaws. As it does do it turns to the centre of the area, and once it is fully in its direction slams its jaw towards the area and releases a wave of Blaze. The Blaze wave goes into the centre and smoke soon begins to cloak the area, with fires emerging from the place. The Obsidian Deviljho slowly stomps towards the area with each stomp creating more fire as the Blaze energies build in its jaws. As it reaches the centre the Obsidian Deviljho takes aim, makes a short jump and smashes through into the ground. With its legs and lower jaw into the earth, the Blaze energy surges in. Soon an eruption of Blaze flames occurs from the centre, covering the entire area. It lasts for around 6 seconds and being in its range will drain away health at an extremely fast rate, leaving hunters to a quick journey back to camp before they get a chance to heal. Their only chance of survival is to be behind a boulder facing away from the flames, the exact same method for surviving Behemoth's Ecliptic Meteor. After the flames are done, the boulders crumble away and the area and Obsidian Deviljho glow and steam with heat. The Obsidian Deviljho takes several seconds to get itself back onto its feet, leaving surviving hunters a big opportunity to get in damage. If hunters are only briefly in the flames they get Blazeblight.

Enraged (Blaze State)

  • 360° Blaze Breath: Obsidian Deviljho takes in a large breath while looking upwards, and then starts breathing Blaze Breath around it in a full circle like the Frontier Deviljho.
  • Ground-fire Wave: The Obsidian Deviljho does a sharp turn towards a hunter with its jaw in Blaze energies, and then slams it through the ground with great force. This sends the Ground-fire flames directly racing through the ground at a hunter instead of around the head as the weaker version.
  • Dragging Blazing Jaw: The Obsidian Deviljho emits up a Blaze Ball in its mouth only to drag it through the ground in a sweeping fashion. This will send several waves of Blaze energies out from the ground and across it. After it is done it still has enough energy left to barf up a small Blaze Ball.
  • Exploding Stone Chunk: Done for the boulder form of a Stone Chunk only. The Obsidian Deviljho lifts the Stone Chunk up, and engulfs it in Blaze energy. It then takes two steps towards hunters before thrusting itself and the Stone Chunk down on them. Upon impact the Stone Chunk breaks in a large Blaze explosion, while also sending four small remnants outwards to cause further damage. Hunters hit by this take heavy damage and are sent flying.
  • Blazing Earth Eruption Chomp: Obsidian Deviljho's strongest attack. Obsidian Deviljho makes a quick growl and rips out a large rock from the earth and melts it into its maw with shocking speed. This starts a rippling Blaze of energy in the Obsidian Deviljho's maw, which it is determined to use. It stomps towards hunters, with slow but long reaching steps, while the Obsidian Deviljho keeps its head up high. Once it reaches a hunter it turns its head at them with a short roar and flings its maw right down onto them. The maw goes in deep into the ground, chomping it without hesitation. A huge burst, eruption style, of Blaze is unleashed from the ground, sending several Blaze element rocks raining down around the Obsidian Deviljho and a raging hellfire of Blaze around its jaw in a cracked circle. After the Blaze flames have concluded their main burst, the Obsidian Deviljho draws its jaw out of the ground and takes a few seconds to recover, leaving it open for attack. If hit directly, the attack can easily cause a faint with full health, or at least do massive damage and send hunters in its range to be sent flying away.

Master/G Rank Only

  • Fake-out Stone Chunk: The Obsidian Deviljho will appear to dig its jaw into the earth as it is about to rip out a Stone Chunk to use. Observant hunters will see that Obsidian Deviljho is more sudden with the initiation of the move and leans more than the actual move. The Obsidian Deviljho then tears out and flips the flat shaped Stone Slab like a large table, crushing any hunters in its way.

Enraged (Fire Rage)

  • Molten Ground Grind: Breathing a concentrated stream of Fire Breath, the Obsidian Deviljho turns the ground molten from heat and then grind its maw into the floor to unearth several large globs of melted ground around. They cause Fireblight and creates a high-rate health draining area of fire on the attack range for a few seconds.
  • Tail Slam And Stomp Shockwave: The Obsidian Deviljho will use a Tail Slam attack, then use to momentum and position to chain it into a Stomp Shockwave with the leg on the opposite side from the Tail Slam. The stomp is done in the same speed of a normal stomp, making it hard to avoid.

Enraged (Dragon Rage)

  • Dragon Breath To Ball: In the middle of its Dragon Breath the Obsidian Deviljho suddenly lifts its head and fires a Dragon Breath Ball faster and larger than the triple shot typically done.

Blaze State

  • Stone Chunk Jump-smash: The Obsidian Deviljho readies itself and its Stone Chunk, and then jumps towards a hunter. Upon reaching the ground it smashes the Stone Chunk into them with a great force, sending them flying if it hits and has a chance of leaving them Stunned.

Enraged (Blaze State)

  • Stomp Shockwave - Ground-fire Wave: The Obsidian Deviljho will first do its Stomp Shockwave, then lift its other leg up to turn or aim the Brute Wyvern again, where it then does its Ground-fire Wave.

Obsidian Deviljho drop Dragon Pods for the Slinger when in Dragon Mode, Bomb Pods when in Fire Mode, and both Dragon and Bomb Pods when in Blaze State.

Ecological Information

Placement In Food Chain

Obsidian Deviljho are unquestionably the apex predators of the environments they invade in. They feed upon what monsters they come across and others that try to challenge it often join the meat pile. Like many a nomadic monster, the Obsidian Deviljho's main threats are other Obsidian Deviljho, other nomadic monsters and Elder Dragons/Elder Dragon tier monsters.

Behaviour Towards Other Monsters

Obsidian Deviljho have been confirmed to be more aggressive than the standard Deviljho, as seen with their interactions with hunters and monsters alike. They attack with more ferocity, leaving little room for planning a strategy. When an Obsidian Deviljho is enraged it will lay its fangs and much more into its attackers, not stopping until they flee or die.

Tracks

Obsidian Deviljho share the tracks as Deviljho, with the addition of "Chomped Ore Vein" and "Torn Slab".

Specific Locale Interactions

Like the normal Deviljho its rocks gain elemental properties if dug up in certain places. The Obsidian Deviljho will enter its Fire Rage Mode more commonly in a volcanic locale or in an area of extreme heat, while it is more prone to entering its Dragon Rage Mode when in a locale where sources of Dragon element is highly present. In the Elder's Recess, only in Area is when it is able to use the "Area Eruptor" attack.

Special Behaviours

Obsidian Deviljho share the ability with Common Deviljho to pick up certain monsters in their jaws and use them to attack hunters. Obsidian Deviljho can also eat ore veins, leaving them unable to be mined. If struck by either Fire or Dragon elemental attacks from monsters or hunters in high amounts, it will trigger what rage mode it will enter next.

Interactions With Other Monsters

Obsidian Deviljho retains all the Turf Wars the MHWorld Deviljho has.

If a Turf War triggers it to enter Fire Rage or Dragon Rage whilst it has been damaged enough to enter its Blaze State, it will enter that instead of the two others.

With Uragaan/Steel Uragaan

Turf War

The Uragaan swings its chin at the Obsidian Deviljho and the Obsidian Jho ducks and bites at the neck. The Gaan gets free and tries to slam its chin, but it is stopped by the bite of the Obsidian Deviljho. The O.Jho then lifts the Uragaan up into the air and slams it down while biting down on its chin. The chin is broken and the Uragaan takes high damage. The Gaan is left on the floor and the O.Jho will usually do a Mega Chomp on it after.

With Lavasioth

Turf War

The Lavasioth burrows underground while the Obsidian Deviljho stays in place. Just when it appears it is going to be a copy-paste of the Barroth and Jyuratodus Turf War the Obsidian Deviljho slams into jaw into the fiery ground and tears out the Lavasioth right before it can attack. The Obsidian Deviljho slams the Lavasioth on the floor two times before throwing it down hard, doing high damage to the Lavasioth and sending it across the area.

With Both Uragaan/Steel Uragaan And Lavasioth

Super Turf War(F)

The Lavasioth and Uragaan both use their heads to ram each other, and begin to circle around. Obsidian Deviljho is almost tripped up by the sliding Lavasioth, which comes to a stop and fires a fire glob at the Uragaan. The Uragaan responds by throwing rocks at the Lavasioth, but they instead hit the Obsidian Deviljho. Angered, the Obsidian Deviljho bites onto Lavasioth's tail as it buries into the ground and tears it back out. The Uragaan attempts to chin slam the Obsidian Jho but it doesn't work due to the Lavasioth in the way. As it tries again the Obsidian Jho swings the Lavasioth in a vicious uppercut into the Uragaan's chin, flipping the Uragaan and sending the Lavasioth rolling across the floor. Both Uragaan and Lavasioth take very high damage from this, while the Obsidian Deviljho takes none at all.

With Basarios

Turf War

Basarios is immediately knocked to the floor with a jaw strike and becomes pinned down by the Obsidian Deviljho. A fire glob is shoot at the Obsidian Deviljho's head to absolutely no effect, and the Obsidian Deviljho begins biting into the Basarioes back. The Basarios wiggles and screams to no avail as its rock carapace is torn up by the fangs of the Obsidian Jho, who doesn't stop until it is satisfied with its small meal. After it is finished the Obsidian Deviljho tosses the Basarios away a large distance. The Basarios takes very high damage from the Turf War and will also have its back wounded if it hasn't been already. Obsidian Deviljho will also regain some health from eating the rocks from the Basarios.

Killing Blow(F)

For this to occur the Basarios/Ruby Basarios must be at least 30% health.

The Basarios tries to be a boulder in a last ditch attempt to ward off the Obsidian Deviljho, unaware that the monster hurls bigger rocks than it with ease. As expected the tactic fails, the stony wyvern is ripped out of the ground. It is thrown onto its back with so much force the Obsidian Deviljho manages to tear off a large chunk of rock from the back during it, which it eats and restores its health(the Ruby Basarios restores more). The Obsidian Jho steps over the Basarios and savagely chomps into its belly, eating more pieces of rock that restore minor amounts of health. It continues chomping until it reaches the meaty middle with no more minerals to obtain. The chomp to that area comes from a squish, and is the one that finishes the Basarios off. The Obsidian Deviljho leaves the Basarios after like any other common prey.

With Ruby Basarios

Turf War

The Obsidian Deviljho bites down the Ruby Basarios and instead of a clean knockdown it gets a crystal shot into its mouth. It prevents a bite but in no time at all it is shattered and the Ruby Basarios is slammed head first to the ground. Pinned down, the Obsidian Deviljho eats away at the rocks and crystals on the Ruby Basarioses back. Once done, it is tossed away. The Ruby Basarios takes very high damage from the Turf War and has its back wounded if it isn't already. Obsidian Deviljho recovers more health from the Ruby Basarios than the regular Basarios due to the crystals.

With Gravios/Black Gravios

Turf War

The Obsidian Deviljho tries to bite the Gravios in an attempt to pin it down like a Basarios. However the Gravios is heavier and more aggressive than its younger form, firing a heat beam right into the Obsidian Deviljho's face, forcing it to let go. The heat beam causes Obsidian Deviljho to enter its Fire Rage and breathe a powerful burst of flames at the Gravios. Even for it, the sudden burst from the attack flinches the armoured wyvern. The Obsidian Deviljho goes in and bites a chunk from its chest, potentially wounding it, then chomping down on its head. In its attempts to break free the Gravios causes the Obsidian Deviljho to shred its armoured face with its fangs. The Gravioses head is wounded as the Obsidian Deviljho pulls away, eating the pieces it tore off. The Gravios takes high damage from the Turf War and is forced to retreat away while the Obsidian Deviljho doesn't suffer any damage and restores some health from the two pieces of armour it ate.

Killing Blow

For this to occur the Gravios/Black Gravios must be at least 25% health.

The Gravios readies up another heat beam as the Obsidian Deviljho goes in for the kill. Right as the beam begins firing, the Obsidian Jho bites into a leg of the Gravios and causes the beam to completely miss its mark and start shooting off to the side. The Obsidian Jho then bites through the chest, making the beam sizzle out from internal damage. Then, the Gravios is bitten in the neck, where its persistence causes the armour around it to become shredded and gnawed. Soon it is unable to resist and the head is slammed with a heavy clang on the ground, killing the Gravios.

With Agnaktor

Turf War

Obsidian Deviljho tries to bite the Agnaktor, who proves agile enough to avoid and slide around the monster, then coiling around it. Rapid pecking is done, which aggravates the Obsidian Jho greatly. As the Agnaktor begins a drilling motion the Obsidian Jho bites its neck, turns around and hurls the Agnaktor away, doing high damage to the Agnaktor as crashes onto the ground.

Killing Blow

For this to occur the Agnaktor must be at least 25% health.

Agnaktor drills into the ground, planning a surprise attack from below. The Obsidian Deviljho isn't having any of this, entering into its Fire Rage and stomping the ground repeatedly with pulsing force. The Agnaktor is forced to emerge right into the waiting jaws of the Obsidian Deviljho, who takes hold of its head and swings the Agnaktor in an arc into the ground. The massive force of its body weight and force breaks the Agnaktor's neck immediately, ending it in one go.

With Beta Sarleen

Killing Blow

Able to be triggered at 30% health remaining for the Beta Sarleen.

The Beta Sarleen shows great fear as it sees the towering Obsidian Deviljho make a stomp towards it, almost making it fall from the tremor. The monsters jaws swells as it enters its fire mode, emitting a fiery orange glow that makes the Beta fully lose all confidence and start to run. But, due to its small stature with its heavy weight, it does not get away from a fast bite. The Beta Sarleen begins howling nonstop as the Obsidian Jho holds it in its fangs. The Beta Sarleen's armour and bones begin to crack under the chewing, and combined with the heat the jaw emits, renders Beta with zero movement and immense pain. Obsidian Jho emits a low growl as it begins to rise its head upwards, with Beta Sarleen going insane. The head reaches skyward position and the Obsidian Deviljho opens wide its mouth, building up pressure. Due to the injuries sustained Beta Sarleen is in a cylinder position, and all it can do is emit one last howl. The Obsidian Deviljho uses a mega chomp right there, creating a burst of flame from its mouth which hides any gore, in a shocking scene, many chunks of plating are sent flying down around the Obsidian Deviljho, which will damage hunters and anything else hit by them. Obsidian Deviljho swallows all remaining minerals and earthy remains on the Beta Sarleen, and then spits its corpse down as a burnt, figureless pile lacking any plating. No carves can be gained from this body, as all materials that can be carved are destroyed and burnt.

With Radially

The Radially covers itself in lava in attempt to prevent it being bitten by the Obsidian Deviljho, who throws a rock at it. Surprisingly the Radially manages to slice it in half and counterattack by sending several Magma element balls at it. They don't hurt the Obsidian Deviljho but they still cause it to be moved backwards. The Obsidian Deviljho goes into Fire Rage and plants its fangs through the molten ground with a small flare and drags it backwards towards it. The Radially is dragged in with the lava and skids right into the open jaws of the Obsidian Deviljho. It is bitten for high damage as the Obsidian Deviljho grinds off all the Magma on it and then tosses it away.

Until the Turf War is available again and it isn't coated in Magma, the Radially will be picked up and used as a living weapon by the Obsidian Deviljho like other Raptorial Bird Wyverns.

With Radobaan

Turf War

The Obsidian Deviljho collides with the Radobaan's jaw as they both attack, becoming stuck on it from the sticky tar. Unable to break free, the Obsidian Deviljho enters its Fire Rage and breathes a stream of fire onto the Radobaan, igniting its tar and destroying the bones on its face. The Radobaan takes very high damage from the fire, and eventually falls over trying to put it out.

With Azure Rathalos

Turf War

The Obsidian Deviljho enters into its Dragon Rage as the Azure Rathalos begins bombarding it with fire breath, fire balls, and then a charged fire ball. Instead of going into Fire Rage the Obsidian Deviljho cloaks the Azure Rathalos in Dragon breath. The element weakens the Azure Rathalos so much that it falls from the air onto the Obsidian Deviljho's jaws, who proceeds to slam it to the floor by the neck for high damage.

With Black Diablos

Turf War

The Black Diablos swings its horns at the Obsidian Deviljho then starts digging at a side angle before the Obsidian Jho can do anything. The ground shakes and the Obsidian Deviljho jumps as the Black Diablos upturns the earth from its leap. As the Obsidian Deviljho is in the air, it grabs a hold of the Black Diablos by the head, making the both of them flip. The both of them then crash to the ground that quakes the area around them and causes the Black Diabloses back and sometimes one of its horns to be wounded/broken from the Obsidian Deviljho tackling it during the impact. The Black Diablos takes high damage from the surprisingly acrobatic counterattack while the Obsidian Deviljho gets back up like normal.

With Tautogoth

Turf War

The Tautogoth tries punching the Obsidian Deviljho to an unsurprisingly non-effective result. The Obsidian Deviljho tries to bite the Tautogoth's hand, but it is pushed away before it can. The strikes of the Tautogoth invoke the Obsidian Deviljho's Fire Rage, which seems ineffective for a fire resistant monster. Obsidian Deviljho rushes towards the Tautogoth for a bite, but is uppercut with a blast powder covered fist, doing high damage to the Obsidian Deviljho. In a sudden use of a situation, the Obsidian Deviljho uses the impact to slam its leg onto the Tautogoth's leg, knocking it down. Before it can get back up the Obsidian Deviljho bites into the Tautogoth's back and slams it to the ground face first and drags it around in a circle, doing high damage to the Tautogoth. The Obsidian Deviljho then bites into the boulder on the Tautogoth's back, biting chunks out of it and damaging it as the Bypaldian breaks free. Obsidian Deviljho regains some health from eating the boulder.

With Bazelgeuse

Turf War

The Turf War is the same as the usual Deviljho vs Bazelgeuse one until the Obsidian Jho goes to bring the Bazelgeuse down. The bite instead causes the scales to detonate in the Obsidian Deviljho's mouth. Due to its Fire resistance, the Obsidian Deviljho only draws back for a second with small damage. Obsidian Deviljho then bites the Bazelgeuse by the torso and throws it to the ground, doing high damage to it and ending the Turf War.

Killing Blow

Able to be done when Bazelgeuse is at 20% health.

The Bazelgeuse desperately tries dropping every bomb scale it has on the Obsidian Deviljho. Although it is showered in explosions, the blasts do not hurt the Obsidian Deviljho, only making it angrier. The Obsidian Deviljho tracks the circling Bazelgeuse and bites the base of the tail. The Bazelgeuse is violently slammed to the ground and before it can get up to do anything the Obsidian Deviljho does a Mega Chomp right into the Bazel's face, killing it. The Obsidian Jho then rips out its jaw from the carcass and eats it. The next rage mode it will enter after this Turf War is Fire.

With Lightning Bazelgeuse

Turf War

Obsidian Deviljho enters Dragon Rage while Lightning Bazelgeuse's scales start to surge as they stare each other down. The Obsidian Deviljho immediately goes to grab the Lightning Bazelgeuse by the tail, hurling it around and scattering away the scales on the tail away from the Obsidian Deviljho. The Lightning Bazelgeuse is then thrown to the floor for high damage. Standing over it the Obsidian Deviljho bites into the Lightning Bazelgeuse's torso. Seeing it in the right spot, the Lightning Bazelgeuse releases the scale bombs on its neck, which all roll under the Obsidian Deviljho. They detonate and do high damage to the Obsidian Deviljho, who collapses down for a few seconds from the shock. The two then roar at each other after the Turf War is done.

With Deviljho

Turf War

The normal Deviljho bites into the Obsidian Deviljho's neck, which it is knocked away from and almost hit with a head swing. The Deviljho tries again, biting down with enough force to cause moderate damage to the Obsidian Deviljho, but it is bitten by the Obsidian Jho almost instantly and thrown off its feet onto its side in a second. The Deviljho is done high damage by this and ends the brief Turf War.

With Obsidian Deviljho

Turf War

The two Obsidian Deviljho roar at each other and proceed to get into a biting clash. This is not effective, and one of the Obsidian Deviljho pushes the other upwards and goes in for a bite to the belly. High damage is done to the Obsidian Jho, and it recoils by throwing its head forward into the other Obsidian Jho's head before it can do anything, also doing high damage to it too.

With Elysium Solmaron

Turf War

This Turf War is only unique if the Obsidian Deviljho can enter its Blaze State, otherwise it is an elemental swap of the usual Deviljho vs Solmaron Turf War.

The two monsters clash with bites and claw strikes, none of which have any real effect on each other, only doing equal minor damage. Seeing no other option the Obsidian Deviljho goes into its Blaze State's rage and the Elysium Solmaron charges up its Thunder Pole energy. With great surges of power the two charge at each other and a huge burst of mixed elements explodes from the clash. Both monsters take high damage and are sent reeling from the power.

With Cantios

Turf War

The Cantios breathes its Fiery Undrea Breath onto the Obsidian Deviljho, who runs right through it and bites the Cantios down from the sky, doing high damage to the wyvern. As the Obsidian Deviljho tries to turn the Cantios over it changes to its land (Pseudo Wyvern stance) and beats the Obsidian Deviljho's jaw with its tail. As it draws its jaw up from the pain, the Cantios swipes at one of the Obsidian Deviljho's legs and then does a Forward Bite into the belly. The Obsidian Deviljho is done high damage and trips over as the Cantios flies away.

With Shadow Cantios

Turf War

Obsidian Deviljho tries to bite at its opponent, but the Shadow Cantios is too fast and hidden in its environment for it to land a hit, especially while it is in the air. The Shadow Cantios claws at various parts of the Obsidian Deviljho with its talons, not getting through the hard scales yet. The Obsidian Deviljho enters its Fire Rage and breathes fire around the area, eventually seeing the Shadow Cantios and burning it, doing high damage to it and bringing to to the ground. Although injured by the flames the Shadow Cantios goes back in with blinding speed. It moves so quickly the Obsidian Deviljho cannot react fast enough as its mouth opens to release more fire. The Shadow Cantios then unleashes a heavy spray of Poisonous Undrea Breath right into the Obsidian Jho's maw, doing high damage to it and poisoning it, as shown by it shaking right after from the effect of it. Shadow Cantios leaves the area right after the attack.

With Optiaster Cantios

Turf War

The Obsidian Deviljho will enter its Blaze State for this Turf War even should it not be at the health threshold yet, feeling the Optiaster Cantios has extreme elemental powers within it and poses a big threat. The Optiaster slashes at the Optiaster with a Water claw, then tries bashing it with a Ice tail slam. Obsidian Deviljho tries to slam the Optiaster Cantios with its Mega Chomp, but fails and is hit with a wave of Wind. The Obsidian Deviljho gets in an attack by ripping up a large chunk of rock engulfed in Blaze and slamming it into the Optiaster Cantios, doing high damage to it but still not enough to knock it out of the air. Optiaster Cantios then launches rocks of Thunder and Dragon elements at the Obsidian Deviljho that break open but are not concentrated enough to damage it. This is what the Optiaster wanted, as when the Obsidian Deviljho shakes off the rubble the two elemental energies blow off and are absorbed into the mouth of the Optiaster Cantios, merging into Thunder Pole. The Obsidian Deviljho gets ready to bite the Optiaster Cantios out of the sky when it suddenly backs out of its reach and fires a Thunder Pole energy ball at the Obsidian Deviljho's belly. Immediately the Obsidian Deviljho is thrown backwards to the floor as its main elemental weakness is exploited for very high damage, knocking it out of rage mode and leaving it flailing on the floor for some time as the Optiaster Cantios leaves the area.

With Vilhelis

Turf War

The Obsidian Deviljho bites unto the Vilhelises arm and is beaten away. A stream of Fire is released, briefly preventing sight from the Vilhelis. The O.Jho uses the opportunity to do a Mega Chomp onto the Vilhelises neck, doing moderate damage to it and knocking it to the floor. But this is not anywhere near enough to do it in, and the Obsidian Deviljho is grabbed by the head and neck by the Vilhelis and suplexed to the ground for high damage in a style not unlike the Turf War between Deviljho and Diablos. The Obsidian Deviljho's head may be wounded by this.

Interactions with The Frenzy/Apex/Hyper State/Tempered

The Obsidian Deviljho has been witnessed in the Frenzy Virus like their Old World species, and are thus able to go into the Apex status.

They have also been seen in the Hyper Status in Old World regions.

Tempered Obsidian Deviljho are Lv2 Threat Level Monsters but require the same Hunter Rank requirements and give the same rewards as a Lv3 Tempered Monster.

Ecology

Taxonomy

  • Order: Saurischia
  • Suborder: Theropod
  • Infraorder: Unknown
  • Superfamily: Violent Wyvern
  • Family: Devil

Obsidian Deviljho are a Subspecies of Deviljho.

Habitat Range

Obsidian Deviljho are nomadic, meaning they invade environments and food chains at their own will. Once thought only to live in volcanic locales, the Obsidian Deviljho was discovered to be equally able to transference any locale like common Deviljho.

The "evolved subspecies" Obsidian Deviljho species were first discovered roaming the New World's locales by the 5th Fleet of the Research Commission, resulting in the first known successful hunting of one of the species. After this, the "New World" species was confirmed to exist in the Old World after unfortunate travellers found themselves almost killed by what they called "a black-scaled Deviljho that breathes both fire and dragon". The Hunter's Guild then separated the old and new Obsidian Deviljho species into the "original species" for the Old World species, and the "prodigious subspecies" for the New World species.

Ecological Niche

A Subspecies of Deviljho, Obsidian Deviljho carry on the infamous traits of their cousins to an even higher extent. They are not only constantly in search of prey, in the sense of herbivores and lesser predators, they will also eat apart the land in which they live in order to eat minerals and ore veins. Whether be it in the Old or New World, Obsidian Deviljho inserts itself as the most dominant apex predator of any environment and locale it is found in whether the current apex predators like it or not, least they end up in its jaws. They will dominate the environment they are currently in and can cause massive destruction to the ecosystem, similar to Elder Dragons. The biggest example of such destruction was by an especially violent individual in the New World responsible for chaos for the Research Commission that almost burned and tore down the Coral Highlands in a mindless act of rage. It constantly gets into fights with other apex level monsters like the Rathalos, Diablos, Gravios, and some high level ones like Cantios and Ryatroxos, and many more, often ending in the Obsidian Deviljho left victorious. If unlucky enough, said apex predator monsters will fall victim to the Obsidian Deviljho's hunger.

As an Elder Dragon-Level Monster, Obsidian Deviljho rarely face competition. Its large size, tough scales and highly aggressive behaviour is enough to deter most other monsters. However, there are few that are capable of rivalling and on rare occasions, forcing the Obsidian Deviljho to retreat. Lightning Bazelgeuse, a Subspecies of Bazelgeuse of rivalling elemental properties and method of getting past its defences allows it to compete with Obsidian Deviljho in the New World. Monsters on par with Elder Dragons and the Elder Dragons themselves, are often are the only monsters capable of undermining an Obsidian Deviljho. Obsidian Deviljho also have to compete with Rajang, whose power and aggression rivals the Brute Wyvern. Their nomadic and highly aggressive behaviour means they sometimes encounter and battle other members of their kind for supremacy of a locale.

Alike the normal Deviljho, should an Obsidian Deviljho cannibalise one of its own and hold an extreme amount of energy, they become a Savage Obsidian Deviljho. These Variants are in a constant state of rage from their overwhelming internal heat that forces them to hunt and destroy their environments in attempts to expel the energy. The blazing elements they expel also steam with harmful ailments taken from the mineral-side of their diets, that have been observed to inflict blindness or a combustible powder onto any that come into contact with it. They've also been seen using their metallic parts to more effects with a natural response of leaking the toxins from its fangs when exposed to poison. Because of their counter-intuitive methods of making themselves more angry to reduce more energy they are exceptionally dangerous to the environment, and elite hunters are immediately dispatched to deal with these Variants whenever one is spotted on the rampage.

Biological Adaptations

Not only do Obsidian Deviljho have all the traits of a normal Deviljho, they also have a plentiful amount of their own. The first notable feature is there hides; cemented in thick, obsidian scales that repel many an attack. The hide is generally gained from the additional mineral intake the Obsidian Deviljho has to maintain its energy, though it can be strengthened by the monster itself. Its bones have also grown sturdier as a result, meaning it can handle immense weight and pressure without risk of breaking. It's strength is often demonstrated in the Obsidian Deviljho's wielding of earth-flattening rocks to smash attackers to paste, and throwing towering monsters off their feet with a single swing of its mighty jaws.

The Obsidian Deviljho can use the Dragon element like a normal Deviljho, and to a far greater expertise. It will often use the Dragon breath to weaken prey and any opponents by blinding them, or to cripple their movements for an easy kill. In this "Dragon Rage" an Obsidian Deviljho will change to a more ranged approach, preferring to use its Dragon breath streams to attack from afar and across a wide flank than attack close up.

Obsidian Deviljho have the characteristic to differentiate them from normal Deviljho in the ability to utilise the Fire element. In the "Fire Rage" the muscles on the Obsidian Deviljho swell up most around its jaws, legs and tail. Instead of Dragon elemental breath, it will breath fiery breath not unlike that of an Anjanath. During this state the Obsidian Deviljho will mostly attack its opponents physically and aggressively. The greater strength gained in its legs allow it to stomp with enough power to send shockwaves racing through the ground. Its tail becomes more of a mace, allowing it to smash whatever is below like a spiked mallet. The Obsidian Deviljho's jaw is expanded both in length and width, revealing additional fangs unique to the Obsidian Deviljho that primarily assist it in eating rocks. The fangs come into full use in the Fire Rage, where they dig up and hold large slabs of rock that the Obsidian Deviljho uses to smash anything in its way. The saliva of an Obsidian Deviljho is altered in this state, reducing one's resistance to elemental damage if they are affected by it.

What makes the Obsidian Deviljho a truly dangerous monster is its Blaze State. When an Obsidian Deviljho is injured or encounters a great threat, its internal energies of Dragon and Fire fuse together into one. This grants the Obsidian Deviljho the mixed element known as Blaze. In this state the muscles swell on all the parts that its two prior rage states boosted. In the Blaze State an Obsidian Deviljho becomes a horrifying destructive force, using methods from both Dragon and Fire Rage, sometimes even together to decimate the enemy. A monster could be doing well against the Obsidian Deviljho up to this point, but then get overpowered and killed once the Blaze State activates.

Ecological Behaviour

The Obsidian Deviljho are considered to be even more aggressive than their more common cousins. They will eat all lesser monsters that it can find and fight to the death instinctively with any monsters that prove to be a potential rival for them, even if it means killing one of its own kind. Not picky eaters, they will eat anything inside the mineral-rick rocks they devour, turn defeated opponents into a quick meal, and like normal Deviljho are perfectly willing to eat other Obsidian Deviljho if it wants to.

Equipment

The Obsidian Deviljho's weapons are a branch from a regular Deviljho's tree, and they exchange sharpness for high elemental damage, with several ones having the Blaze element.

The armour of Obsidian Deviljho grants the full set skill of Obsidian Rage. This skill will boost the elemental defence and attack for a hunter either for Fire or Dragon depending on the element of the weapon they have. If they don't have a weapon with either element, it triggers if they get an elemental blight of them. If hunters use a weapon with Blaze element, they get boosts to both their Fire and Dragon attack and resistance.

Notes

  • If not appearing as part of the 5th Fleet/MHWorld, Obsidian Deviljho appears without a questline and at random like its original Old World species.
  • Once the quest-line is completed, Obsidian Deviljho can appear in Expeditions and Investigations.
  • A Savage Obsidian Deviljho also appears in Master Rank after certain requirements are met. It too has a story-line.
    • The New World Savage Obsidian Deviljho species doesn't replace the normal Obsidian Deviljho in Master Rank unlike with the standard Deviljho species.
  • Blazeblight is the fanon blight for the Blaze element, which combines the effects of Fireblight and Dragonblight. Hunter's may also be inflicted with Severe Blazeblight which acts like Severe Fireblight and Severe Dragonblight.

Trivia

  • Obsidian Deviljho originally was just updated to include 5th Gen changes, but Chaoarren later decided the monster needed a revamp to differentiate it more from the standard Deviljho and make it much better.
    • Main reasons for a revamp were its exclusivity to volcanic locales and not many differences from the regular Deviljho; thus a need to make it much more unique.
    • He also wanted to make the revamp as if it was an actual update monster to World, and not just a generic "it's here, so kill it" scenario.
      • The Obsidian Deviljho's story-line and the wide addition of new attacks, mechanics and two addition elemental modes were all added to make Obsidian Deviljho feel like a brand new experience, yet still retain enough original aspects for it to still remain a Deviljho Subspecies. It's Chaoarren's way of making people who look at the monster and thinking that "it's just a Deviljho but black" be completely amazed when they discover the truth.
      • Chaoarren also included the story-line of Obsidian Deviljho to make it feel as a immense threat, to make it build up to the final, hunting quest. He also included the notable events as fan-service for people who hate The Handler's character and prefer the Serious Handler in her place.
  • When the Obsidian Deviljho in the questline is defeated, the quest completion theme will be the one that plays when an Elder Dragon is defeated for the first time in Monster Hunter: World.
  • Obsidian Deviljho gains altered sounds while in its Blaze State, becoming more bellowing and furious in nature.
  • In the story of Monster Hunter: World, the Obsidian Deviljho's story-line takes place after Xeno'jiiva, Deviljho, Kulve Taroth, Lunastra, Behemoth, and Leshen but before the events of Iceborne.
  • The carves have unique descriptions because of the userbase's universal disliking towards the copy-paste carve descriptions in World.
  • This is the first major revamp Chaoarren has done for a monster page.
  • This monster is the first to include a story-line/quest-line, and the inclusion of such started to inspire other users to add ones to their monsters as well.
    • The positive reaction to the story convinced Chaoarren to add a story to the yet to be revealed monster that is a continuation of that story.
