The Ancient Forest is an area first introduced in Monster Hunter: World, and revamped in Monster Hunter World Cataclysm. This area is a thick lush forest that can't easily be traversed by normal means. The Ancient Forest is home to a variety of flora, fauna, and monsters. After Dalamadur trampled through the area, the great tree was spared, but some of the low-lying areas have been near cleared of greenery. Other ares have been opened up however, leading to new monsters being discovered.

Environments[]

As the name implies, the Ancient Forest consists of a massive forest, but is also comprised of clearings close to the coast and a combination of cliffs and massive trees that creates a vast vertical space. Post-Dalamadur, more areas with dense foliage have opened up, as well as beachlines. Areas previously enclosed have also widened and show signs of destruction.

Shorelines[]

This section of the map is comprised of mid-sized grasslands surrounded by the forest, many groups of herbivores can be found here including Larinoth, Aptonoth and Kestodon, other monsters that frequent this area include Jagras, Maccao, Kulu-Ya-Ku and Anjanath, who wander around these parts in search of food. Other monsters such as Glavenusn and Seltas Queen have begun to lay claim to this area in hopes of gaining territory. These sections have expanded somewhat and have increased sized beaches home to monsters such as Rimaikara and Impirica among others.

Lower Forest[]

The lower forest is thick and lush with greenery, which provides the perfect environment for Pukei-Pukei to camouflage itself, Great Jagras, Tobi-Kadachi, Rathian and Anjanath also wander these parts. Zinogre, Nargacuga and Aponemha among many other monsters also stalk the undergrowth searching for their meal and brawling for territory. This is a great location for collecting plants and mushrooms, where groups of Mosswine can be found snuffling for goodies Many sections of this area also contain bodies of water where Gajau can be seen among smaller fish. Some parts of this area were devastated by Dalamadur, with one place now being almost devoid of large plants.

High Forest/Ancient Tree[]

High in the cliffs and branches of massive trees, one can find the nests of Flying Wyverns such as Rathian and Rathalos, though other monsters such as Scarred Yian Garuga make their homes here as well. Most monsters found in the shorelines or the lower forest don't come here unless provoked, and they'll generally attempt to flee if the King of the Skies or another powerful monster makes its entrance. Luckily, this monolith of nature was not attacked in any way by Dalamadur, but a new nest was located in the higher branches that houses some lower tier monsters.

Thorny Undergrowth[]

Through new paths opened up in the chaos of Dalamadur's crossing, new areas have opened up, darkened by the leaves overhead and filled with tangled vines and thorns, alongside strange fungi. Most monsters don't come here, though some such as the hardy Euophistos and the slick Aponemha make it their home easily. Other monsters such as Rodenna packs can also find a place here in the undergrowth, and it is the prime spot for Spectral Chameleos amidst the darkness.

Monsters by Rank[]

DLC monsters are included and their names will be written in bold & italic.

Camps[]

There are 5 known locations of camps.

  • Southwest Camp (1) - Starting camp
  • Northwest Camp (8) - Useful for hunting Pukei-Pukei or Anjanath, found by crawling through a gap
  • Northeast Camp (11) - Unlocked through the story
  • Ancient Forest Camp (17) - Near the Rathalos nest, automatically found during Bugtrapper quest
  • Thorn Covered Camp (19) - In a tunnel leading from the first area of the Thorny Undergrowth, automatically found in the assignment "New-New World"

Notes[]

  • The apex monsters of the Ancient Forest are Rathalos, Nargacuga, Zinogre and Aponemha.
  • Many resources can be gathered from this location.
  • Vines can be used to trap monsters, leaving them open to attacks.
  • Some of the plants in this area can be used as weapons.
  • This area is similar in ways to the Jurassic Frontier as they both contain prehistoric plants such as ferns, horsetails, cycads, tree ferns, Araucaria, as well as a large, massive tree.
  • Rain is commonplace in the Ancient Forest, water usually accumulates in the upper areas, which can be used by hunters to forcefully push monsters into the lower levels.
  • The Ancient Tree, the landmark at the center of the Ancient Forest, grew to a massive size from the bioenergy of dead Elder Dragons nurturing it.
  • This area was the second one demolished by Dalamadur, after the Hoarfrost Reach, but was the first one known to have been trampled through due to the destruction of Astera.
