Alaethiana is a medium sized Flying Wyvern Found in the Elders Recess where it feasts on the Plentiful Crystals in the area.

Physiology

Much like Legiana, Alaethiana is a slim and agile Flying Wyvern, with a similar wing structure of overlapping leaf-like sections making up the wing (but with 3 sections instead of 4), it also has two black horn like structures on its head. Unlike Legiana, these are hard and stiff, allowing them to be used offensively. The rest of the head is also black with a cluster of spines at the back of its jaw (probably used to help cool the flame sac in its throat), these spines continue down the length of the body down to the tail webbing. Alaethianas wings and most of its upper body is covered by a smooth and surprisingly soft hide which has a pale grey mottled texture, this extends down to the tail fins which have the same mottled texture on top, the membranous part of the underside of the tail is a very pale yellowish colour, also found on the underside of the wing webbing. In contrast to the smooth upper skin, Alaethianas underside is covered in rough and very hard dark grey scales, these extend to the legs and down the arms, and are interspersed with dark red pores, these pores are where the burning hot crystal dust is released and can be released from each part separately. The spines mentioned earlier follow the boundary where the smooth skin meets the rougher scales and point backwards, they are very conductive of heat and probably form the main system for cooling Alaethianas body as the heat can easily escape when Alaethiana is moving quickly (such as when its flying).

Behaviour

Alaethiana is surprisingly passive for such a powerful predator and will happily coexist with most monsters in the elders recess, this is perhaps due to the lack of competition for food, however if it is provoked into a fight it will defend itself with clouds of red hot crystals, this is effective for most monsters but when confronted by some of the regions more heat resistant inhabitants like Uragaan or Lavasioth it will usually flee as its usual defence is less effective.

The exception to this normally peaceful temperament is when it is defending its nest, Alaethiana will become quite aggressive if a threat gets too close to its nest, the nest itself is usually located high up in craggy landscape of the recess but occasionally will nest in the crystals itself, due to the difficulty in reaching the nest and the aggressive nature of its residents, not much is known about the breeding habits of Alaethiana.

Alaethiana have also been observed “sneezing” through the pores in its underside, it is likely this is to prevent the crystals near the outside from cooling and clogging the pores which would prevent it from using its most effective defence.

Useful Information

Poison is very effective against Alaethiana as it clogs the pores on its underside, cooling and thinning out the crystals that are released weakening the cloud of crystals.

As with most Flying Wyverns it is susceptible to bright flashes of light so flash pods and Brightmoss are very effective.

It has also been observed that water pods can be used to saturate the pores in an area on Alaethianas body, this cools the crystals weakening any cloud that is produced, water pods are also effective at dispersing the clouds of hot crystals so are a very effective tool to use against Alaethiana

Also Crystalburst has no effect on Alaethiana unless it hits directly in the face, this is probably as a result of it being used to the bursting crystals

Mounting/Clutch Claw

When mounted Alaethiana will behave like any other similar flying wyvern like Legiana or Rathalos. (Head, Back and Tail can be moved to)

When Clutch Clawed Alaethiana will usually react like other flying wyverns but can either produce or walk into a cloud of hot crystals to try to damage the hunter clutched onto it (head wings and legs can be clutched either side but the tail can only be clutched on top).

Ecological Information

Alaethiana
	A Medium sized Flying Wyvern that Gorges on the bountiful crystal deposits found in the Elders recess. It is capable of superheating the crystals it eats to produce a cloud of scalding hot crystal dust that it uses to defend itself.

Placement in the Food Chain

Alaethiana is a top predator in the elders recess alongside Rathalos and Brachydios, and mostly eats a mixture of meat and minerals, it will melt the plentiful crystals in order to eat them, and will hunt Barnos in a similar fashion to how Legiana hunts Raphinos.

Behaviour Towards Other Monsters

As mentioned before Alaethiana is a relatively peaceful creature but will aggressively defend itself from threats with clouds of hot crystals.

Tracks

Alaethiana will leave footprints when it lands but as it stays airborne most of the time these are rare, a more common trace to find is fine crystal dust which might be a result of a clash with another monster but is more likely one of its many “sneezes”. It is also possible to find evidence of it eating, melted crystals or a Barnos carcass depending on what its eaten.

Special Behaviours

Sometimes Alaethiana will fly down and perch on one of the collapsible crystals in area 8 of the elders recess, it is possible to sneak up and collapse the crystal beneath it causing it to fall and take damage.

Abilities

Alaethiana is able to produce a cloud of red hot crystal shards from the many pores on its underside, these clouds can have different properties depending on when they are made, the crystals can be either weak, normal or sparking. Normal crystals are the most common and are a deep red in colour, these crystals do constant tick damage (like a more powerful version of Teostras heat aura) and if stood in for too long will cause Fireblight, Weak crystals are a paler red and do less tick damage, they also tend to form smaller clouds than the others and cannot cause Fireblight, Sparking crystals are the most dangerous, they are a dark orange in colour and create sparks, these crystals will cause Blastblight on contact, all three types will slowly disperse over time.

Alaethianas wings and tail lend it its incredible agility but also allow it to create gusts of wind, these gusts can be used to move around the clouds of crystals, though they will quickly disperse if moved too much.

It can also produce an incredibly hot Mucous in the flame sac in its throat which it can then spit out, it can use this spit offensively causing Fireblight upon hitting a hunter and causing clouds of sparking crystals to explode, but it mostly uses this to melt the crystals that it likes to eat without having to crush them.

Rage and Tired States

• Rage State: when enraged Alaethiana will produce sparking crystals, and steam will start coming out of its pores, it will also fill its mouth with mucous ready to launch it at attackers
• Tired State: when tired Alaethiana will slow down and not fly so much, it will start drooling too.

Breakable parts

• Head: one horn breaks and the other is chipped, scarring on the forehead
• Both Wings: both wings can break separately resulting in scarring revealing the pale yellow layer beneath it
• Tail: the tail is scarred and torn in places revealing a similar yellow layer to the wings
• Legs: both break together and get chipped talons and scratches

• Breaking most parts can drop shinies, these can be shards, piels, needles or very rarely (~2%) a mantle.
• Breaking the head can drop a Hardhorn as well as the others.
• Alaethiana will drop Bomb pods with heavy damage and Thorn pods from clutch claw attacks.

Alaethiana will fight with most weaker monsters but only if provoked, If it gets into a fight with Uragaan, Lavasioth or Brachydios (or any very fire resistant monster) it will flee

Alaethiana can be frenzied apex or tempered

• Tempered Alaethiana is a more powerful version that uses more elemental attacks
• When infected with the frenzy virus, the frenzy crystals clog the pores replacing hot crystal attacks with frenzy crystal attacks (the spit still causes Fireblight)
• An Apex Alaethiana has mastered the frenzy and produces clouds of both frenzy and fire
