The Dark Hain is one half of a forest complex, the other half is the Sagnum Woods. There is a big lake in between both areas with some paths around and through the lake connecting both parts. The complex is surrounded by a mountain range which makes journeys to the areas by foot quite difficult, but the guild is working on ways to improve the accessibility of the area with airships and wingdrake flight support.

The Dark Hain, like its name suggests, is a forest hunting ground in which sunlight is scarce and only a few clearings. While still abundantly inhabited many life forms are hidden from sight while others use bioluminescence to get noticed. Apart from the bioluminescent organisms the areas are mostly monochrome with dark shades of green, brown and grey. The monsters are very wary of their surroundings and, while not aggressive, fight back if approached too closely. Most predators in the Dark Hain are ambush predators and blend into the background quite easily.

Layout[]

  • Base Camps: The first camp is in a small hidden cave on the island in Area 16, the second is up in the tree tops between Area and .
  • Area 16: A small island in the lake between the Dark Hain and Sagnum Woods. The island consists mostly of rocky terrain with a few grass patches. There are paths going to Area 18 straight south and Area 19 south-west.
  • Area 17: An area a little elevated at the shore of the lake. The ground is mossy and moist with a few shrubs growing here and there. Area 20 is accessible from here south-west.
  • Area 18: One of the areas right at the shoreline. The swampy and muddy ground makes it hard to move in. Reed and other plants grow at the shore. The way leads south to Area 20. There's a passageway only accessible to monsters that connects this area with Area 28 in the east.
  • Area 19: This area is also located at the lake. Thin trees grow here with some rocks scattered around as well as some patches of grass. The way goes on to Area 21 in the south.
  • Area 20: On a huge tree root covered in shadows going further up to the treetops. A lot of small plants like creepers grow on the path. There's a cave entrance to Area 27 and further up the tree to Area 23 in the south-east and Area 24 in the south.
  • Area 21: A very dark and densely grown area with many small to medium-sized trees and shrubs. Brightmoss grows here and there as well. The path goes deeper into the forest of Area 22.
  • Area 22: The forest here is pitch black and it's hard to see anything without a torch or brightmoss. There are only trees and not a single small plant is able to grow beneath. The cave entrance east leads to Area 29.
  • Area 23: Higher up on the tree but still covered in shadows. Many different roots intertwine forming a net of branches and ways to follow as well as a lower part of the area. You can take a shortcut to Area 30 by jumping down a hole in the east.
  • Area 24: A small area that leads further up to Area 25 in the south. More variety of plants is found here and more light shines through, yet it is still quite dark. A shortcut can be used to jump down west to Area 21.
  • Area 25: The highest spot of the area in the treetop of a huge tree. It's the only place in the Dark Hain that has a lot of light. There's also a monster nest here. Jumping down east brings you to Area 23.
  • Area 26: A moist cave segment with stalactites all over the ceiling. The area is on the small side. A way leads south-east to Area 27.
  • Area 27: The cave here is only moist at where Area 26 and Area 28 connect to. It's very dark here apart from the brightmoss occasionally growing here. The only other way leads to Area 29.
  • Area 28: This part of the cave is flooded and can only be crossed by swimming. The area is wide but not that deep. Diving down will lead to a narrow way leading south-west to Area 27.
  • Area 29: An area with many ledges and different altitudes. The way from Area 27 is the lowest while both connections from Area 22 in the west and Area 30 in the east are located higher.
  • Area 30: This area is small and serves as a nest for monsters. Flying monsters can come in from the hole in the ceiling close to Area 23. The only way out is to Area 29.

Hazards[]

  • The mud in Area 18 is hard to move in if someone stands too long in one spot. After a bit of walking around, the mobility gets back to normal.
  • Creeping plants may inhibit the mobility in narrow ways but can also be used to trap monsters in.
  • Fog may appear on and close to the lake.

Notes[]

  • This hunting ground can be accessed as a single area but may also be combined with the Sagnum Woods into one big area depending on the quest.
    • Expeditions usually give access to both areas, once both areas are available.
    • Kalopern only appears when both areas are accessible.
  • While it shares a lot of monsters with the Sagnum Woods due to them being connected, some monsters stay on one side of the lake or have different morphs depending on which side they live.
  • The lake is accessible from all around but ways outside are only the mentioned paths.
