Aireldihu is a relatively small, yet powerful Bird Wyvern notable for its distinctive pink, white, brown, and black colouration, sticky, ninja-like aesthetic and improvised weaponry, ability to punch above its weight class due to its unique abilities, and usage of electrostatic levitation in battle, which it can use in conjunction with its speed, physical strength, and intellect to get an edge in battle. It forms a mutualistic relationship with a fellow Bird Wyvern known as Mireikara, working alongside it to drive off and kill other monsters found within the Dragonslayer's Haunt, most notably the aggressive and invasive Inabisuto species.

Physiology

Aireldihu greatly resembles an avisaurid, possessing clawed fingers on its wings, an avian build, an advanced wing structure that allows for strong flight, winglets, a mouth lined with sharp fangs, and a pair of elongated tail plumes; however, unlike the majority of them, it possesses a beak, and it has a number of differences to set itself apart from them. Similar to a red-breasted nuthatch, it has a distinctive black eyeline, albeit one modeled to vaguely resemble a ninja's eye mask, a large head, a short, stiff tail, and sturdy, hooked claws designed for climbing. Like an owl, it possesses a flat facial disk, and its beak resembles those of a crow or a kea, being large with a sharpened tip; in addition, it has brightly-coloured wings akin to those of a kea, and these wings are built like a lammergeier's, being long and narrow. It has opposable thumbs and functional, flexible wing digits, and its body is covered in a dense layer of feathers made up of both normal down feathers and specialized, barbed pennaceous feathers that lie under the normal pennaceous feathers, giving it a distinctive fluffy appearance akin to a chinchilla's. The barbed feathers resemble the spines of a decorator crab, being long and narrow, and the tail plumes are hooked.

Aireldihu's body possesses a mixture of browns, blacks, and whites, with pink being seen on the edges of the facial disk along with the kea-like patterns seen on the underside of its wings and tail; in addition, its specialized, barbed pennaceous feathers are pink. The head and back are brown in colouration, with the facial disk being white with a faint, pinkish "blush", whereas the tail, secondary feathers, and feathers lining the upper legs are black; in addition, the chest, stomach, primary feathers, lower leg feathers, and scapulares are white. Its beak and talons are black, and its large, expressive eyes are brown. When enraged, its eyes glow a bright pink. Two vertical black spots can be seen on its chest, whereas a thin, black line can be seen on its stomach.

Ecology

Aireldihu is omnivorous, but predominantly eats meat, feeding on seeds, nuts, fruits, insects, arachnids, worms, suet, eggs, amphibians, small reptiles, and smaller monsters, such as Aptonoth, Mernos, Seltas, and Vespoid Queen. It is a powerful climber, possessing hooked claws on its wings and feet that allow it to cling and perch onto trees and branches with ease, and its long, narrow wings allow for strong flight, with it flying at high speeds for extensive periods of time; in addition, it utilizes a mixture of sight and hearing when hunting, with its facial disk directing soundwaves towards its ears and amplifying its hearing whereas its strong eyes provide it with powerful vision that allows it to detect prey and foes from miles away, and the black "mask" on its face helps reduce glare in strong sunlight. It possesses flexible digits and opposable thumbs, allowing it to manipulate and craft tools, and it uses its claws in conjunction with its teeth to form makeshift kunai, ninjatō, kusarigama, shuriken, and makibishi spikes from materials like horns, claws, vines, rocks, twigs, and bones, and will lace them with dung or toxins derived from plants, fungi, and toads after creating them in order to increase their effectiveness in battle. Similar to chinchillas, it has very fluffy and dense plumage, with this plumage consisting of normal down feathers and barbed pennaceous down feathers underneath the ordinary layer of pennaceous layer, and this dense plumage is designed to protect it from attackers, allow for silent flight, and trap air and other gases to lighten the feathers, providing the Bird Wyvern with impressive agility in the air; however, due to the feathers' density and the Bird Wyvern's lack of waterproofing preen oil, they will become weighed down when wet, and the feathers will trap water as a result of their density, leaving it vulnerable to hypothermia and fungal infections; it is for this reason that it will avoid areas with high concentrations of water.

Aireldihu's most notable attribute, however, is its control over electrostatic levitation, using electric fields to levitate charged objects and counter the effects of gravity, and it produces these electric fields through specialized organs found within its back and wings. It can use these electric fields to charge its barbed, highly conductive pennaceous feathers before it flings them at foes or objects in the area around itself, with these feathers producing an electric field of their own that causes targets to levitate upon lodging themselves in them; through this effect, the Bird Wyvern can manipulate the environment to its advantage, forming electrically-charged armour consisting of random materials around itself, creating floating platforms that it can hop on to evade attacks, sending hunters and smaller monsters flying into the air to leave them open to further attacks, and swinging and launching its improvised weapons at foes from afar, granting it considerably more range than one might expect from such a small creature. To stimulate the charges that allow its electric organs to function, it will tap specialized pads on its digits, and sustains the charges via repeated pulses of its organs instead of producing one large, continuous shock. The complex system of nerves that control the electrical organs provides the Bird Wyvern with extremely fine control over the electric currents and fields it produces, allowing it to punch well above its weight, though it does have a notable setback: not only can too much usage of electricity, especially in higher voltages, risk self-damage, but overstimulation of the electrical organs causes a strange gag reflex in response to the overflow of sodium into its ion channels. Essentially, too much usage of electrostatic levitation and other electricity-based abilities causes the Bird Wyvern to become nauseous and vomit to try and rid itself of the excess sodium, leaving it exhausted and open to attacks.

Curiously, Aireldihu has been observed forming mutualistic relationships and even friendships with a fellow Bird Wyvern known as Mireikara, hunting together to increase their chances of success, helping look after each other's offspring when the other is out hunting, playing games like chase and tug-of-war with sticks when not hunting, and teaching each other's offspring new skills, such as tool use. This tight-knit relationship was developed in response to the many powerful and opportunistic predators found within the Dragonslayer's Haunt, as well as invasive species, most notable the hyper-aggressive and opportunistic Inabisuto, a heterodont-like Brute Wyvern that forms large packs and has no qualms with invading the Bird Wyverns' nests to eat their eggs and offspring. The two Bird Wyverns will fight tooth and nail to drive off the Brute Wyverns and prevent them from conquering the Dragonslayer's Haunt, making their presence a boon overall, though because their battles can be very destructive, hunters are called to clear out their numbers to prevent mass destruction.

Behavior

Aireldihu is curious and inquisitive in nature, investigating any new objects or organisms that it encounters, and is highly intelligent, being capable of using its claws and teeth to form makeshift kunai, ninjatō, kusarigama, shuriken, and makibishi spikes from materials like horns, claws, vines, rocks, twigs, and bones, lacing them with dung or toxins derived from plants, fungi, and toads after creating them in order to increase their effectiveness in battle. If provoked or attacked, it exhibits extreme aggression and ferocity in battle, and is underhanded in how it engages foes, utilizing tactics like attacking from behind or within the shadows, lining its weapons with the aforementioned dung and toxins, and using its electrostatic levitation abilities to give its improvised weapons considerably more range than expected and throw foes that are light enough high into the air, leaving them open to further attacks; all of these traits allow it to punch well above its weight, making it considerably more dangerous than its small size and cute appearance would suggest. That said, however, it is quite skittish and flighty when not hunting or defending its territory, cautiously observing and interacting with the area around it when not engaged in battle and preferring areas that have been left undisturbed by humans or other monsters due to them generally offering more prey selection; in addition, it is rarely seen near human settlements due to its shyness around humans.

It forms a mutualistic relationship with a fellow Bird Wyvern known as Mireikara, working alongside it to fend off other monsters and forming friendships of sorts with it when not hunting, and despite what its aggression and tenacity would suggest, having one in the vicinity of the Dragonslayer's Haunt is ultimately beneficial due to it warding off invasive species, most notable the highly aggressive and opportunistic Inabisuto species; however, its clashes with them can be very destructive, requiring hunters to hunt it to prevent too much destruction from breaking out.

Because water can screw with its plumage due to it lacking preen oil and having dense, owl-like feathers that trade waterproofing for silent flight, it will try to avoid getting wet if possible due to the risks of developing hypothermia or fungal infections that come with it, steering clear of areas with large quantities of water, such as shorelines; in the event that it must clean itself, it will produce a dusty powder from its down feathers that removes oil and parasites from its body. It will also try not to utilize its electrostatic levitation ability too much, as overstimulating the electrical organs that provide its signature ability creates a nauseous gag reflex in response to the over-surge of sodium ions in its nerves, forcing it to vomit to release the excess sodium and leaving it open to attack.

Abilities

Aireldihu exhibits control over the Thunder Element, using electrical organs located within its back and wings to create powerful electric fields that levitate charged objects and counteract the effects of gravity, and it can attach barbed, conductive pennaceous feathers to various objects and organisms alike to achieve this effect; though this ability, it can form electrically-charged armour consisting of random materials around itself, create floating platforms that it can hop on to evade attacks, send hunters flying into the air to leave them open to further attacks, and utilize improvised projectiles that give it considerably more range than one might expect, and it will make extensive use of electrostatic levitation when enraged. It is a strong climber, being able to scale trees and walls with ease due to its rigid, hooked claws, and is much faster and stronger than its small, fluffy appearance would suggest, using speed, agility, and strength alike to overpower its foes.

An intelligent monster, it possesses the ability to craft and manipulate tools and weapons, and uses its teeth and claws to form makeshift kunai, ninjatō, kusarigama, shuriken, and makibishi spikes from materials like horns, claws, vines, rocks, twigs, and bones, lacing them with dung or toxins derived from plants, fungi, and toads after creating them in order to increase their effectiveness in battle, and utilizes pragmatic tactics in battle, attacking from behind and within the shadows, using improvised weapons to its advantage, using its stellar climbing abilities to get the drop on foes in densely wooded areas or areas with thick walls, and the above-mentioned utilization of its electrostatic abilities. It also exhibits a strong sense of teamwork, forming a symbiotic relationship with the Mireikara to take down foes with impunity.

Habitat

Aireldihu is predominantly found in the Dragonslayer's Haunt, but can also be seen within other densely wooded areas from time to time.

When enraged, it can charge and levitate the weapon, allowing it to use the attack from a wider distance.

Long-Range Grapple

Aireldihu does a sweeping motion with the weighted ball of its kusarigama, attemtping to wrap the vines connecting the ball to the sickle around the hunter's legs. If it succeeds, the hunter will-take low-medium damage and fall to the ground, enacting a pin, and Aireldihu will leap at the hunter and repeatedly jab them with its sickle, dealing medium damage with each strike. If the hunter does not escape in time, the monster will hoist the lassoed hunter over its head, then fling them across the area at high speed, with the hunter taking high damage upon landing or making contact with a tree or a wall.

Hook Swing

Aireldihu swings the sickle portion of its kusarigama at the hunter twice in a row while moving forward. This attack deals medium-high damage and has a 50% chance of inflicting Bleeding. When enraged, it can charge and levitate the weapon, allowing it to use the attack from a wider distance.

Direct contact with the ball deals high damage and has a 50% chance of inflicting Stun, whereas the stones deal low damage with each hit, but can rack up damage quickly due to their low knockback, and are guaranteed to stun the hunter. It can only use this attack when enraged, and can use it both on the ground and in the air.

Chop + Stab + Slash

Similar to Long Sword users, Aireldihu does an overhead slash with its improvised ninjatō while moving forward, then jabs at the hunter with it before doing an upward slash. Each hit deals medium-high damage and has a 50% chance to inflict Bleeding. When enraged, it can charge and levitate the weapon, allowing it to use the attack from a wide distance.

This attack deals high damage, has a 75% chance of inflicting Bleeding, and has a homing effect. It will often leap between trees or walls before using the actual attack to try and trip hunters up.

Takedown

Aireldihu moves to the side, then lunges at the hunter, attempting to grapple them. If it makes contact with the hunter, it will grab them by the arm and neck before slamming them to the ground face-first, dealing high damage. It will sometimes use this attack to counter Blademasters, and is more likely to use it when enraged.

Grapple

Aireldihu lunges at the hunter with its wings wide open before grabbing at them with its claws. If it makes contact with the hunter, it will grab them by the arm and throw them over its shoulders, dealing high damage.

Flechette Shot

Aireldihu flies backward while flapping its wings forward, shooting three barbed feathers at the hunter at once. This attack deals medium damage and inflicts Anti-Gravity. It will primarily use this attack in the air.

Talon Strike

Similar to an enraged Malfestio, Aireldihu flies towards the hunter at high speed with the intention of striking them down with its talons. This attack deals high damage.

Meteor Strike

Aireldihu uses its barbed feathers to lift up and levitate a large cluster of rocks and debris, hovers it over a selected hunter's head, then sends it down with full force by pressing the pads on its digits, sending shrapnel and dust everywhere once it hits the ground. This attack deals high damage and inflicts Severe Thunderblight. It is more likely to use this attack when enraged, and can use it both on the ground and in the air.

Meteor Shower

Aireldihu uses its barbed feathers to lift up and levitate a large cluster of rocks and debris, then sends it down with full force by pressing the pads on its digits, creating a rain of rocks and debris that homes in on a selected hunter. This attack deals high damage and inflicts Severe Thunderblight. It is more likely to use this attack when enraged, and can use it both on the ground and in the air.

Satellite Drop

Aireldihu uses its barbed feathers to lift up and levitate a large cluster of rocks and debris, lifting them high into the air before sending them flying towards the hunter at high speed by pressing the pads on its digits. This attack deals high damage and inflicts Severe Thunderblight. It is more likely to use this attack when enraged, and can use it both on the ground and in the air.

Gravity Storm

Aireldihu flies high into the air, uses its barbed feathers to rip up large clusters of rocks and debris and levitate them high into the air, forms a giant meteor with them, then flings it at the ground at high speed, producing a massive explosion with a mighty shockwave once it hits the ground. This attack deals high damage and inflicts Severe Thunderblight, and its damage output is so great that it can potentially be a one-hit kill on hunters with insufficient armour. It will only use this attack when enraged, and it will exit Rage Mode after using it to avoid overextering itself.

Charged Platforms

Aireldihu uses its barbed feathers to tear up the ground in a manner similar to Wind Serpent Ibushi and Thunder Serpent Narwa, creating a series of levitating platforms that it can use to its advantage in battle, hopping onto them to avoid attacks and launch attacks from above. It will only use this attack in areas that do not have trees or walls for it to utilize, and these platforms will last for 70 seconds before falling back to earth. Getting hit by a falling platform deals high damage and has a 50% chance to inflict Stun. It is more likely to use this attack when enraged, and can use it both on the ground and in the air.

Charged Armour

Aireldihu uses its barbed feathers to electrically charge rocks and debris and attract them to itself, with them forming a rocky layer of armour over its body, raising its defenses until the armour is knocked off in a manner similar to Taikun Zamuza's or falls off on its own, the latter of which will occur upon it becoming exhausted. Water attacks can be used to weaken the charge, causing it to fall off at a faster rate. It is more likely to use this attack when enraged, and can use it both on the ground and in the air.

Repairs

If Aireldihu's ninjatō or kusarigama are rendered cracked and chipped from repeated attacks or being hit by a hunter's attacks, it will stop by a plant-gathering spot to repair them, leaving it open to attack for around 4 seconds.

Restock

If Aireldihu runs out of kunai and shuriken, it will stop by a bone-gathering spot to forge new ones through the use of its teeth and claws, leaving itself open for 5 seconds.

War Cry

If Aireldihu is in the same area as an Mireikara, it will let out a powerful screech, invigorating both itself and the Mireikara and causing them to become notably faster and more aggressive than they normally would. This boost will last for 60 seconds before dissipating, and it will see more use if either one is at low HP.

In-Game Description

Aireldihu
N/A A relatively small, but mighty Bird Wyvern famed for its vibrant, fluffy plumage and usage of improvised weaponry and electrostatic alike in battle, both of which can shift the tides of battle in its favour in a mere moment despite what its unassuming appearance would suggest. Possessing incredible strength and agility combined with a keen intellect and barbed feathers designed to trasmit powerful currents to anything they lodge themselves into, it overcomes all odds against it through sheer underhanded aggression. Can often be seen hunting alongside a fellow Bird Wyvern known as Mireikara, working with it to strike fear into enemies' hearts and bring about victory.

Trivia

  • Aireldihu is based on the Avisauridae family, lammergiers, keas, red-breasted nuthatches, corvids, ninjas, chinchillas, electrostatic levitation, owls, decorator crabs, the Morrigan of Irish mythology, and Ochaco Uraraka from My Hero Academia.
  • Aireldihu's name is derived from Airashī, the Japanese word for "adorable", eldingu, the Icelandic word for "lightning", and kohuru, the Māori word for "assassin".
  • Aireldihu's weakness to Water is based on the dense fur of chinchillas trapping water, leaving them vulnerable to hypothermia and fungal infections and requiring them to bathe in dust to stay clean as a result.
  • When exhausted, the speed of a number of Aireldihu's attacks will be reduced, and they will have longer windups. It can recover stamina by feeding on carrion or the current area's local Herbivores.
  • If Aireldihu overexerts itself while enraged, it will stop to puke, leaving itself open to attack for a few seconds and dropping a shiny in the process. The likelihood of this happening is uncommon, however, with it being most likely to happen when it is about to become exhausted following its enragement.
  • Aireldihu's roar requires High-Grade Earplugs to negate.
  • Aireldihu's dynamic with Mireikara is based on Izuku Midoriya's relationship with Ochaco Uraraka and the Morrigan inciting warriors to do battle and turning the tides in their favour.
  • Credit goes to MHAdvent for the third nickname.
